Question:
What is this disease *all about* The Janester
Response:
sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease that affects the moisture producing glands in the body. the immune system attacks moisture producing glandular tissue, especially the salivary and lacrimal tissue. some people have "only" dry eyes and dry mouth. others have extreme fatigue, joint pain, neuropathy, digestive problems, pleursy, kidney poblems, liver disorders, etc. it can go systemic or stay localized or anything in between. it can be primary sjogren’s as in that is the only autoimmune disease you have or secondary as in you also have RA or lupus or any other autoimmune disease. it can progress or not. sounds a bit like the wonderful world of lupus, eh?<g> the sjogren’s syndrome foundation has a website with lots of great info but i can’t remember how to get there from here. maybe it’s www.sjogrens.org but i just cannot remember. there is also a site that deals with just the neurological problems at www.sjsworld.com. i can’t remember the others cause i’m having a bad brain week. don’t know if it’s the lupus or the sjogren’s but does it really matter? hope that helps some. madison

wow! well, Janester – is this a rhetorical question or do you want details?
From watching my mum and friends with the disease it’s about constantly clearing your throat, having two dozen bottles of "fake tears" scattered around the house and in various purses, pockets etc., constipation, uh… difficulties with intimacy due to lack of proper mucous membrane responses, etc. Bouts with iritis. It’s about fighting gum disease and GI tract bugs because the environment is better for them to reproduce in. It’s like Nature said "hmm… let me think of a really irritating disease that isn’t all that threatening but will drive you completely bonkers.". for details… I don’t know enough about it to answer that. there’s some good sjogren’s sites in the FAQ (or Andy can point them out if he gets to this question before I do). Some folks do get joint pain with Sjogren’s also – or at least that’s how it’s been said to me. How much of that is actually Sjogren’s and not some overlapping autoimmune thing I dunno. take care, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. I have heard that because this syndrome reduces moisture in the mucous membranes (incl. the gut lining) that this can cause abdominal problems but to what extent I’m not sure. kc cat kcdoc…@ghg.net http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm
