Question:
Does anyone have Kaiser for a health plan? I have been considering changing doctors, because my current doctor is too far away. I just changed to Nylcare to keep my doctor when I just switched jobs, but we have an open enrollment in October so I can switch if I want to. I was wondering though, how are they with Imitrex? Are the doctor’s underprescribing medicine to save money? Right now, I can get one Injection kit and two boxes of Imitrex per month. I do not take the medicine everytime that I have a headache because I am saving for a rainy day. If I can countinue to get this many pills a month, I can start taking the Imitrex when the migraine starts instead of trying to stop it with "Excederin Migraine". Thanks, George

when under MDIPA (a maryland HMO), they would only allow us 6 pills a month! HELLO!? So I started stock piling, the refils when my SO (who suffers clusters) wasn’t undergoing a cycle). You need to call the insurance companies and ask what needs to be done to get an increase in the prescription (if they have a limit), also your doctor will know what to do. I didn’t have to be forceful with my husband’s doctor, but if need be scream and yell and hollar at your doctor to get them to send the proper paperwork so that you can get the meds you need. If the doctor won’t do it, find one who understands the HAs. I’ve had to make a few doctor’s jump through hoops because of my discoid lupus (not as bad as the systemic Lupus), and finally found a great dermotologist, but getting my PCP to write a letter (so I didn’t need a referral every time) was almost impossible, but they finally did, and as it turned out the dermo himself looked into my insurance and told me my visits without a referral (unless I was having major steroid treatments), were cheaper than going in network (had a "Preferred insurance" luckily). So I was paying $7 a visit (20 percent) instead of $15 for a "specialist" visit with a referral. They always did was was most economical for me when billing. And this doctor is so sympathetic and caring. This is a doc who will call me at 8 pm at night, rather than have me come into the office and pay for a visit, because if we can work it out on the phone, he’d rather do that for me. Now THAT is a good doctor! So George, call the insurance companies, if you aren’t sure what to ask, go see your Human Resources department at work, find out what you need to do, and then call your doctor, and if your doctor won’t do it. Find a doctor who will. they are out there. And amazingly enough (but maybe not , since like attracts like), I’ve found, since I’ve found this dermo, every doctor he recommends to me or my husband, is the same in how they care for and worry about their patients and treat us not for just the symptom, but look for the root cause, or try their best to find out the problem). ANd since my dermo is in practice with his dad, they constantly trade off on seminars, they go to lots of seminars to find out what is new in their area. And most importantly, they care about their patient’s emotional state too (with discoid lupus, that’s important, ever seen a cat who has licked itself so much that it has bald spots? That’s been my head of hair
! I can only get so creative with hair styles
. ANd then my sense of humor kicks in with the look. But a sense of humor is hard when one has a bad HA!). hugs, and hope this helps! hugs, — Mary f. <No Kitty! it’s MY POT PIE! _ _ ( / ) | ) ) _,,,/ (,,_ /, . ‘`~ ~-. ;-;;,_ |,4) -,_. , ( `’-’ ’-~~’ (_/~~’ `-’_) It’s a widdle,widdle, widdle pud (She’s not big on sharing, is she?) http://home.earthlink.net/~maryf

My daughter suffers from migraines and is a member of Kaiser (Texas) she is under the care of an outside neurologist who contracts with them. She has been on imitrex (nose spray) and pays a co-pay of $5.00 per prescription. If she has a limit, they have not advised her of such. Of course they (Kaiser Texas) has been bought out by a Houston HMO (the sale will finalize sometime this fall), and all this may change when out contract ends in Jan.1999. She had limited success with imitrex pill, but the spray has worked wonders for her.
