Bumbles will sting but only as a last resort as it is their death sentence. So no, you don’t want to pick one up and hold it. While working at the estate one of my guys hit a hive of bumbles. They came swarming out and got on me and under my loose shirt. I was on the ground right next to them. Well, so much for being modest – that shirt came off and quickly. But I was never stung as I tried to keep from squishing them between my skin and the material. I just kept telling myself that they don’t want to sting me. Everyone I worked with knew I was deadly allergic to bee stings. Not a single sting. I was lucky. They were panic stricken because we hit their home a perfectly logical reason to sting. We left them alone and moved what we were going to place there to a different spot. I would not allow someone to destroy their hive or kill them. Had that been yellow-jackets or wasps I’d probably not have been here to tell anyone. Carpenter bees, I believe, do not have stingers but the problem is they look very much like bumbles. But carpenters are very territorial and therefore keep the other nasty wasps and yellows-jackets away. Honey bees (American and English) are also very tranquil except for the African honey bees (aka killer bees). Fortunately the African bees have not migrated this far north. I’ve made my husband keep some of the old fence posts. We’ve dropped them into the garden so the carpenters will stay in my back yard. I’ll use the old unpainted fence posts for vines, etc. It’s so important to teach the children to respect nature. If I don’t who will?
Freezing June bugs? LOL I thought the fun was tying string to them and then letting them fly like airplanes in a circle overhead. June bugs are considered garden pests – closely relates to Japanese beetles. You are talking about the greenish large beetles? He likes to pull their wings off and put them in my freezer. I > had to have a LONG talk with him. I am not sure if it is a "boy" thing or a > sense of power.
Hi Rhonda oh yes, right.- mini blinds.. I was feeling guilty because I’ve not laundered my bedclothes for a while after seeing the TV program, which prompted me to search the subject out. It does say bi-weekly but the TV show – 60 minutes? (I forget) said weekly for sheets, probably bi-weekly for other bedding. Its worse for whatever is touching the body or near where we breathe in. I’ve been aware of them for years but some people have so many troubles with breathing or allergies and don’t realize how much trouble these "little boogers" (where’s Maggie) can cause. Next time we can talk about what lives on lettuce…maybe <smile> Hugs J

You don’t want to see what walks all over your food or you’d never eat another bite. LOL Ok, now just imagine what the world would look like if you didn’t have these scavengers around eating up our dead skin. We’d be knee deep in dead skin and it would probably clog our waterways, etc. BTW, brushing your teeth has nothing to do with cavity prevention. It does help sweep away the food that the bacteria feeds on but that is about it. But of course bacteria eat therefore they defecate. It’s their feces (acidic) that "eats" at our teeth. When the feces builds up it tends to harden in the mouth and causes plaque. So that morning breath is nothing more mouth bacteria sewage. Which brings up the old adage "if it smells like shit, it probably is" But remember that bacteria is essential for your digestive system and overall health. Too much mouthwash destroys all the bacteria including the good guys. And I think someone figured out that during our lifetime we will eat 26 spiders while we sleep. Sleep tight and don’t let the bedbugs bite. Bev "J" <ReSea…@example.net> wrote in message

Oh my gosh is today just the day for teaching our kiddos about bugs…….I had to give my 8 year old a lesson on why he shouldn’t go around squishing June bugs. He likes to pull their wings off and put them in my freezer. I had to have a LONG talk with him. I am not sure if it is a "boy" thing or a sense of power. He is the youngest of three boys and the others just run all over him. Ahah……I have answered my own question….now to see how I can make him feel more empowered. He is fascinated with all creatures and has bought several books trying to learn about them it could be just natural curiosity. We need another trip to the Zoo. I had a spinal tap when I was 18 due to a horrid headache, I don’t remember much, but I do remember screaming and they were looking for meningitis. I beleive they had to send that test out because it was a small town.
Fewer and fewer news servers are permitting binary messages or attachments in text only groups such as ASMS. Forte APN and Newsguy do not nor does the popular free server in Germany. I cannot find binary associated with any message from you and Earthlink is being cavalier if they are permitting such.
Welcome Christy!
Hi Christy! I couldn’t find the other thread about mouth sores from awhile back. It must have been under another subject heading. I know others here do have these problems though & they will be along. Do you notice a reaction to any foods or types of lights? Your tongue sounds like something that happens to Mair, when she eats cherries or stays under flourescent lights too long. She will most likely post if she’s feeling up to it. Hugs, Maggie

Response:

Hi Christy! [picture me digging my way out of a pile of totally unnecessary paperwork] Here I am! I get several sorts of things with my mouth, but none of them sound like what you are having. None of them swells up like that. I get painful lesions in and at the sides of my mouth, seemingly due to acidic fruits (but only sometimes). And I get a painless condition where the inside of my mouth blisters and all the skin peels off. This seems mainly due to flourescent lighting… it happens when I go into the supermarket. Even though it is painless, when that happens, I know I am receiving rays that are harmful to myself, and I try to get out of the store as soon as I can. And just this year I have started having a problem with my tongue being very painful. The first few times it happened, I thought it was from a burn. Then I started really looking at my tongue, and I noticed it had a small line down the center, turning into a crack! Well, that is a sign of B vitamin deficiency, so I started doubling up on my vitamins, and that very painful situation is now cleared up. But I don’t have anything like what you have, with the swelling and all. It sounds like you need an anti-inflammatory of some sort, with all that swelling. Do you have a good rheumatologist? You need to have a capable doctor take a look at your mouth. Hoping you feel better soon… Mair "BJ" <B…@sk.nojunk.ca> wrote in message

Hi Rhonda, I have had severe cellulitis on my calf that went up my leg and into my groin and a surgeon was called in to see about possible amputation… scary scary situation but it did resolve itself without any drastic measures with iv antibiotics and treatments. I haven’t had a bout since but I am very careful to not break skin with a razor or out doors (never wear skirts or shorts) and watch my foot care as that too can create a problem with infection… I am sorry to hear you have it on your face! How did it start there? Hope you are feeling better soon and hugs to you from me, Shelagh

Hi Rhonda! It’s good to hear from you, but I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. From what I read, you get cellulitis from a cut, scrape, even a dog or cat bite/scratch. It’s not contagious, they said, but the eye thing makes sense if it’s in your eye too. The site I found referred to children, but I imagine that’s just because they get so many scrapes & cuts & are more susceptible to this skin infection. The face & lower legs are the most common areas for cellulitis. Maybe that will ease your mind a bit. <http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/skin/cellulitis.html> I hope it clears up soon. How is work going for you & how’s the Remecade working? Hugs, Maggie P.S. If someone responds, please include my post as Rhonda has had trouble viewing mine in the past. TIA

It’s largely given to treat the rashes and other skin conditions associated with lupus. But it does seem to hold some promise. For those who might not recall – Thalidomide was the nasty drug used in the 50s/60s to help pregnant women deal with "morning sickness." It turned out to cause horrific birth defects (I believe at 100%.) So obviously there are some stringent rules on prescribing and taking this drug. But otherwise, it seems to be something worth investigating and may actually be less toxic for some of us vs. the chemo drugs. The Pennsylvania chapter just published a small blurb about it in their newsletter. I’d recommend checking out www.lupus.org and searching for possible articles on-line that will give you more info and perhaps put you in contact with other patients using this medication. Best of luck with it – keep us updated on how it goes. takecare, kcat

Response:

Sheila, I have taken Thalidomide for my skin rash, I started to get neuropathy (spelling) which caused me to lose feeling in my fingers and toes. I was told to stop taking it due to these effects. I did however start to notice an improvement in the rash prior to stopping it. I hope this helps and hope even more it works for you. — Brad On Sat, 25 Oct 2003 21:45:51 -0400, "shelia" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<sandhalli…@comcast.net> wrote: >I just started taking this and wondering if anyone had good news withit.
I use Bull Frog – hate, *hate*, HATE the way it feels going on, but it’s virtually unnoticeable when it dries. It stays on all day, which is the major benefit for me as I usually am in a sandy area and cannot re-apply safely.

Sunblock. I use Banana boat sport 50. I also use the Banan Boat Maximum sunblock UVA UVB 50 the new one that absorbs quickly. Another that is great? Very expensive but works well? Total Block 65. You get it at www.dermadoc.com and order from them, they are cheaper than the manufactures site. But it will discolor clothes I also buy Rit Sun guard. I do my clothes in it esp in the summer time with long sleeve tops and shells. Drop packet in wash and it is good for a whole load. Lasts up to 20 reg washings. It does help believe me. At least for me it has. And I have lots of skin rashes due to sun before using all the above. Get it at www.rit.com or www.dermadoc.com under sun protection NO I do not slide out of bed at night either LOL And all the sunblocks NO smell Thats me for now janers

I have very sensitive skin, but have found Sol Bar to work for me. I use the SFP 30 because it is a gel. I can also use Shade gel. The drugest has to order both of these as they are not usually sold over the counter. My dermatologist recommended these. Mary

There’s a new kind worth lookiing for and trying – a sunblock which contains titanium dioxide instead of the usual chemicals. Yes, thats the stuff in brilliant white paint.
Actually this doesn’t sound crazy to me. You are probably having an allergic response that is accelerated by the sunlight. I can wear Banana Boat Baby SPF 50 which is a sunblock that is for sensitive skin. It still will cause some irritation if I wear it several days in a row. Unfortunatey I didn’t wear it today and I got sick while working in the yard much faster than usual (cause I also wear a hat/drape/long-sleeve shirt, etc). take care, kc cat – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Jim & Tina Carmichael wrote in message <36F2A0D4.1D8FE…@funtv.com>… >>Does anyone have trouble wearing sunscreen? I’ve tried various kinds. >>They all make me feel ill–I get nauseus (sp?) and sick feeling.
I’ve got very sensitive skin which has reacted to other sunscreens in the past (even before I got sick), but at the moment I’m having good results with Hawaiian Tropic ‘Bioshield’ 30 SPF facial sunblock. It contains titanium dioxide, without producing that lovely reflective white mask effect that many of the TiO2 sunscreens produce. The packet says it is suitable for daily use.
Hi, I’ve been keeping a headache diary over the past few weeks per the advice from others in this group since my migraines have gotten worse. One trend that I am noticing is that often I start to get a migraine if I’ve been out in the sun for a few minutes. Its not a long time, but I guess it does not take long to trigger a headache? I’ve also been noticing over the last month or so that sometimes lights seem much brighter than usual, however it usually seems to be sunlight that is serving as a possible trigger for the headaches. Does anyone have any advice or answers as to why all of the sudden I would become super sensitive to the sun or other forms of bright light and is this normal? Thanks, David

I have always thought that very bright light was a trigger for migraine episodes for some people. Perhaps you are one. You now know to avoid bright sun w/out a hat and sunglasses. — Sharon Boring Amabile Wife, mother, perpetual student and frequent volunteer

Two thoughts on this one, from a red head with fair skin who is very sensitive to sunlight . . 1 live in the UK – sunshine is a rare, warming and welcome occurrence! 2 when the Sun does come out, I find dark glasses – whether slab tint or photochromic – make little or no difference, wheras Polarised lenses make a huge difference because they actually modify the light patterns. They are now available as prescription lenses – whether as single focus, or bi/tri-focals or Varifocal lenses in the UK – my Optician["optometrist" to those who live on the other side of The Pond] imports mine for me – from the USA. Expensive but very effective when the sun does shine in UK or when we go to Southern Europe . . tho incidentally I find the problems greatest when the Sun is low in the sky, as it is at these northerly latitudes, and presumably the Sun’s rays enter the eye at a much more direct/unfortunate angle.
Bright lights/bright sunlight are a trigger for me too David. My specs have photochromatic lenses for this very reason! In the summer, the general brightness of the days means I am permanently wearing shades – so I look *kewl* too During the winter, when the sun is low in the sky, I need to wear shades as, for example, when driving, the sun flickering through the trees of the roadside verges is a really strong trigger.
Fair skin and polycythemia .. and porphyria .. coincidentally … CNS involvement .. finally .. light/sun sensitivity – People with very fair skin tend to be sensitive to the sun’s rays and burn much faster. People with light colored eyes may find that bright lights are more painful because more light is able to enter their eyes, more so than someone with dark brown eyes. There are several medical disorders that can cause sun sensitivity. Porphyria, photophobia, lupus, and xeroderma pigmentosum, to name a few. Medications and herbal supplements can also cause light/sun sensitivity. Among these are St. John’s Wort, Dong Quai, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, birth-control pills, medications for high blood pressure, and nearly all psychiatric medications. http://www.lionsgrove.com/vamptraits.html migraine headaches – First of all, be sure that what you’re experiencing is in fact a migraine. It isn’t just a ‘really bad’ headache. Sufferers will usually experience visual disturbances such as auras or blind spots followed by an intense pain on one side of the head, usually behind the eye. Sufferers tend to become sensitive to light and nauseated during this time. They can also experience some numbness on the side of the body opposite of the pain. Ask me how I know . No one knows the exact cause of migraine headaches, but researchers have deduced that environmental influences can trigger a migraine. Triggers are varied. For me, migraines usually came after a highly stressful period. For my sister, it’s strong smells. Migraine headaches are also believed to be hereditary, which is somewhat evident by my own immediate family. Of the five members, only my father has not experienced them. Who loves ya.
Biochim Biophys Acta 2002 Jun 6;1571(2):157-66 Metal ions as potential regulatory factors in the biosynthesis of red hair pigments: a new benzothiazole intermediate in the iron or copper assisted oxidation of 5-S-cysteinyldopa. One of these was identified as the oxobenzothiazine 8, previously obtained under nonphysiologically relevant conditions, while the other was characterized as the novel hydroxybenzothiazole 9. Besides 8 and 9, carboxylated and noncarboxylated benzothiazine products were obtained by persulfate oxidation of 1 in the presence of iron or copper ions. The ratio of formation yields of carboxylated/noncarboxylated benzothiazines, determined after reduction o f the mixture, was lower than that of the control reaction run in the absence of metal ions, and much lower than that of the oxidation carried out in the presence of zinc ions, in agreement with a recent report. Notably, 8 and 9 were formed in variable yields under different oxidation conditions including tyrosinase/O(2), peroxidase/hydrogen peroxide, and the hydrogen peroxide/or (9E,11Z,13S)-13-hydroperoxyoctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid/Fe(III) systems. Mechanistic routes to 8 and 9 were proposed based on the results of experiments involving in situ generation of labile benzothiazine intermediates. Overall, these results allow to formulate an improved biosynthetic scheme in which metal ions act as critical regulatory factors determining pheomelanin vs. trichochromes formation.

My sun sensitivity is really not that big of a problem for me. I just put on sunscreen and sunglasses. I have been sensitive my whole life. Just born with pale skin. It isn’t any meds or anything I am on. If anything my skin has gotten tougher over the years. http://www.lionsgrove.com/vamptraits.html

Strange source…. not exactly medical info or anything…. A riot to read though *lmao* migraine headaches – First of all, be sure that what you’re experiencing is in fact a migraine. It isn’t just a ‘really bad’ headache.

Please don’t lecture me on what is or isn’t a migraine headache. You don’t know me or my history. I know what a migraine is. I have been diagnosed over and over by several doctors. No one doubts that I suffer from migraines. Sufferers will usually experience visual disturbances such as auras or blind spots followed by an intense pain on one side of the head, usually behind the eye. Sufferers tend to become sensitive to light and nauseated during this time.

DUH…. who are you lecturing here?? I think everybody in here has the basics down… They can also experience some numbness on the side of the body opposite of the pain.

Not always opposite side. My face goes numb on the same side as the pain. Ask me how I know .

Probably from reading this NG. Di Donato P, Napolitano A, Prota G Department of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Naples Federico II, Complesso Universitario Monte S. Angelo, Via Cinthia 4, I-80126, Naples, Italy [Medline record in process] In the presence of iron or copper ions, the course of the oxidation in air of 5-S-cysteinyldopa (1), the main biosynthetic precursor of pheomelanins and trichochromes, was markedly changed affording two main products.
What exactly do photochromatic lenses do? Are they better than polarized lenses for example? David

photochromatic simply go dark in bright light & light/clear in dim light and varying shades inbetwen as the light changes. For me, they just reduce glare/brightness enough to avoid the light acting as a trigger. If I haven’t got my contacts in, I need specs to drive/watch telly/cinema etc., as I am shortsighted. Having the photochromatic lenses means I don’t have to keep switching from sunglasses to ordinary specs as I go from inside to out and back to inside again. See http://www.thursoeyecare.co.uk/Light%20Sensitive%20Lenses.htm for a pic of the effect of them working.
Hi Laura, (I love your name, it is my first daughter’s name: Laura Mae, and I still love the sound of it though she died after living only 5 days.) I don’t have RA and SLE but I do have Lupus with sjogren’s syndrome and raynaud’s phenomena secondary to it. It is a miserable trio along with pmv, copd and renal complications as well as skin issues… so I too am on pred and it has been several years of daily dosage along with chloroquin. I am doing alot better now at age 50 than I ever did when younger! I think that age mellows the illness, as well as the person LOL! I hope you get some answers and get to feeling better though! Hugs from Shelagh http://continue.to/lupus

Is all > that typical of lupus also? > Regards, > Hoyt McKagen > Belfab CNC – http://www.freeyellow.com/members/belfab/belfab.html > Best MC Repair – http://www.freeyellow.com/members/batwings/best.html > Camping/Caving – http://www.freeyellow.com/members/batwings/caving.html > My dog drove off in my pickup truck, but left my wife behind!!
