I kept meaning to ask the same thing: since hair loss is so common with lupus I didnt’ think to ask *why*? Her first steroid dose she didn’t lose any hair beyond the norm – in fact baths were more pleasant because I didn’t have to clean doggy fur out of the drain. But that didn’t last. Maybe the difference between steroid shot (first time) and steroid pills (now) *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. I’ve noticed alot of posts about our furry friends and their skin/hair problems. I know this isn’t about lupus but I thought I’d put my 2 cents in as before the lupus took my life over I was/am a veterinary technician who happens to have a dog too, with serious skin problems. Have you all considered allergies in the dog food? It is the major cause of skin problems with dogs and like us, what we eat affects everything. My golden retriever has horrible allergies and loses fur mainly to allergies. After alot of trials, she’s obviously allergic to corn in the dog foods, which is usually a main substance. I have her on a Lamb and Rice dog food and that has helped alot-there are others out there like Venison, or chicken only. It takes patience and trial and error to see what your dog reacts to, but it might help. I lost a dog to lupus recently and she had lots of skin problems and we treated her with prednisone. Why God laid that one on me I’ll never know-but she was a wonderful dog for 12 years. I couldn’t watch her suffer anymore-poetic justice-I think not. Anyway, hope this may help one of your furry pals. God Bless. Cindy

Hi Cindy. Yes, this was the first line of attack actually. But when I put her back on her original food (which is Nutros Lamb and Rice – no wheat or soy) she did much better. I had several suggested – vegetarian kibble (she wouldn’t touch it even if I dropped it and pretended it was human food), then the new "Science Diet for Sensitive Skin" (made it much worse) and so on. We’re back on the Nutros – it has very few added ingredients which makes it easier for her to deal with. However, there are other allergies that can cause these problems – and I have noted she has more trouble when the grass in the back yard gets too tall (hubby has been busy and I can’t push our lawn mower). >obviously allergic to corn in the dog foods, which is usually a main substance.
this was one that was in the "Sensitive skin" food – and may have been making Bayta a lot more uncomfortable. > I have her on a Lamb and Rice dog food and that has helped alot-there are >others out there like Venison, or chicken only.
Again, the Sensitive skin version was chicken – and though she loved the food it just seemed to make her skin worse. Maybe for some dogs it’s great. I think the only real difference in it vs. other SD foods is it a) has no wheat b) has extra vit. E, omega-3s and similar vitamins. >and error to see what your dog reacts to, but it might help. Fortunately, Bay is doing quite well right now – the dead skin thing is actually a good sign (wounds healing). The hair loss is not. It’s kind of strange – where she had a hot spot last month (which started this whole mess on some level) the hair has grown back thick and healthy and the skin is the white color it’s supposed to be! Anyway – in this case I think that it was multiple problems – the hotspot from a diet change, the infection from getting steroids without antibiotics and then the demodex taking the opportunity to get a grip on her again. Theoretically they’re not supposed to get it again after being treated as pups – but "theoretically" never means anything to Bayta. Theoretically a 55 lb dog should not be able to balance on a 5" window ledge – but she does.
Hre skin is not as pink/inflammed as it was (and has been for years) since the dipping. And we are currently weaning her from the steroids while she’s still on cephalexin. She seems a lot more comfortable. some of the hairloss – could that be from the dip itself? (Mitaban). Shes’ been gradually losing her hair for some time (she’s 7). She’s not in pain and doesn’t scratch frantically anymore. just losing the hair and skin is flaky. *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. Just wanted to say, I am so sorry for the loss of your dog. I’m sure you already know that Millie (the first President Bush’s dog) also died of Lupus.
