Response:
The drugs you listed are not known causes of drug-induced Lupus. Also, DIL is reversible once the offending drug is discontinued. Good luck to you and God bless. Krystie Rose
Response:

Response:
Certain drugs, notably hydralazine, which is used to treat hypertension, and procainamide, which is used to treat irregular heartbeat, can trigger lupus attacks in people who have no history of the disease. Usually, once the drug is discontinued, the symptoms gradually disappear. There is a genetic predisposition for drug-induced lupus, which is related to the way that medication is metabolized in the body. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -CHELLY1169 wrote in message <19990310131424.28006.00000…@ng134.aol.com>… >please if you know im only curious….. i used to use drugs like pot and acid >and i used to abuse prescription pills like codiene etc….. i dont now, but >could i have caused my own lupus? is that what drug induced lupus is? holy >shit. panic. >–tink

You’ve already gotten the basic reply. Not likely that you have DIL (drug-induced lupus). Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is what your doctor told you you have. SLE. There is also Discoid Lupus (DLE) which is mostly skin problems and rarely evolves to systemic lupus (systemic meaning it can affect any system of the body). ******** the following is from the fledgling FAQ that I am building for the group with the groups help******* Lupus is an Autoimmune disease similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis. It manifests in three basic forms, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) and Drug-Induced Lupus (DIL). DLE can sometimes progress into SLE but that is rare (less than 10% of the cases). DIL is almost always reversible within about 6 months after removal of the offending drug. SLE is the type talked most about on this group but can have symptoms that are common to DLE also. Lupus is a disease that is grouped with other diseases sometimes called Collagen Vascular Diseases or Connective Tissue Diseases. SLE is a very private disease, as it can take many forms and therefor is called the disease with the 1000 faces. You didn’t *cause* your disease, chell, all the stress, surgery and loss you have experienced recently probably triggered this bad flare. But you were likely genetically predispositioned to get this disease. Do you have family members with rheumatoid arthritis or similar complaints? Right now you need more than anything to try to reduce the stress in your life whether through counseling or meditation or medication or exercise or something. Your panic (though completely understandable) threatens to worsen your symptoms, too. So please seek support and some sort of way to relax – even if it’s just pampering yourself in the evenings with a nap or a warm (not too hot) bath. Chill, sweetheart. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Chelly}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} kc cat

Stop right there Chelly! Do not blame yourself for your lupus. Recreational drugs may cause problems because of illegality – it’s a risk we have to choose for ourselves whether or not to smoke dope, take acid or whatever. The risks are ones shared with many others; although too much dope will exacerbate the fatigue and forgetfulness that often go with SLE. The drugs that cause drug induced lupus are medicinal drugs – ones doctors prescribe. I understand that it usually goes away after these medications cease. Use some of the many useful links people constantly post in this newsgroup, and read some reliable recent books (obtainable from most lupus organisations). Then I’m sure you’ll be both reassured, and in a better position to deal with the real problem – learning to manage life with a chronic illness. Just don’t let anyone tell you it’s your fault. Best of luck, Ellena. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -CHELLY1169 wrote in message >please if you know im only curious….. i used to use drugs like pot and acid >and i used to abuse prescription pills like codiene etc….. i dont now, but >could i have caused my own lupus? is that what drug induced lupus is? holy >shit. panic. >–tink

[snip] The usually-blamed ones are: Procainamide, used for heart rhythm abnormalities Hydralazine, used for high blood pressure Isoniazid, used for tuberculosis Quinidine, used for heart rhythm abnormalities Phenytoin, used for convulsive disorders (seizures). — Andy For Austria & its philately, Lupus, & much else visit http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk
