Question:
Hi, I’ve just been scheduled for a skin biopsy for this rash that’s on my back, stomach and thighs. I’ve never seen a dermatologist before (although I am currently under the care of a rheumatologist for rheumatoid arthritis, Fibro and Raynauds). What kinds of questions should I ask the dermatologist? What will the examination be like? Thanks.

I’ve had a skin biopsy done twice. It’s very simple. They novacain it, then take a sample and maybe 1 or 2 stiches. The first was taken from the inside of my arm where there was no rash. The next time was a couple of years later when my rheumy suspected a mixed connect. tissue disease. This time the dermatol. took a sample from the rash on my face and neck. When I had the first one done my rheumy had the dermatologist in with him do it to confirm lupus. That, along with the blood work, proved beyond a doubt that it was lupus. They won’t be able to tell you anything until the test results returns. I have lupus, Fibro and Raynauds. These all go hand in hand a lot of times. I also have Sjogren’s. You might ask the dermatologist about that as well as lupus. Maybe your Dr. suspects one of these. My mother had rheum. arth., then later lupus. Good luck. Mary
