Question:
Thanks very much for that information. I thought it was too good to be true & my Rhemy is pretty up to date with what is going on, I had wondered why she had not told me about it but sounds like it is not the drug that is for me & I do have Nephritis so better stick to what I am on. I just wish when they go onto current affair programs on TV that they would tell the good with also the risks involved. I will discuss it with my Rhemy when I next see her, anyway I really dont think I could come up with the money that it would cost to stay on it. Thanks, Gail KCat <kcdoc…@ghg.net> wrote in message

Hi I was watching one of the current affair programs about this new drug on the market it costs $1400.00 Aust $ it is suppose to stop inflamation with rheumatoid arthritis. Has anyone heard of this drug. Is it already on the market anywhere else & how much does it cost? I am going to talk to my Rhemy next month about it. I figure if it helps with inflamation that would be a big help with Lupus. Just curious if anyone knows of it????? I have taped the show will check out the name again. Thanks. Gail

Hi Gail, Last I heard, Enbrel and related drugs (tnf-alpha blockers) are not recommended for most lupus patients. They have a higher risk for kidney problems then NSAIDs or Cox-II inhibitors. Remicaid is another in this group of meds – great for RA (for *some* RA) patients, but not recommended for SLE. Some docs don’t listen to "recommendations" though (and thank goodness or I wouldn’t have slept for the past 3 years (Ambien)). However, this is a serious issue so you would have to discuss it thoroughly with a rheumy. when Enbrel first came out Dr. Wallace gave a talk down here at the Med Center (I melt into any background and look like a potential med student I s’pose) <g> and he and a couple of other rheumies (who were *not* in the clinical trials as Dr. Wallace *was*) went back and forth about the use of tnf-a blockers with SLE. But perhaps the evidence has changed though I doubt it given I recently saw a remicaid advert that said "not recommended for SLE or diseases where kidney complications could be a factor" (paraphrashing).
