Sulfa (US spelling) and sulpha (UK spelling) is a group of atoms one of which is sulphur/sulfur; you’ll find it forming a part of a drug. Many lupies react badly to it. [all these have 2 spellings - US with a 'f' and UK with a 'ph'] sulfite is a different group of atoms containing a sulfur atom and I think 3 oxygens. You’ll come across it in domestic chemicals such as the disinfectant for babies bottles. sulfate is much the same but is 1 sulfur and 4 oxygens. Again, domestically common – magnesium sulfate is Epsom salts! I haven’t seen chondroitin-only supplements but they are probably out there so it might be worthwhile to check into that. The two so often go hand-in-hand right now though. <political/environmental agend turned on – do not read if easily offended by environmental discussions> MHO and request: Please do not use "shark cartilage" or chondroitin supplements claiming to be made from this source. If some other source of cartilage (I’m assuming the cattle business) is somehow slightly inferior to shark cartilage) so what? The shark population is being decimated by cultures and individuals who have decided this is a magic substance to cure all ills. [yes, I'm a bunny-hugger to some degree but the above is also just common sense - why pay more for "shark" cartilage when other/cheaper resources are probably just as effective or close enough] <Political/environmental agenda turned off> *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. Whoever told you about hydrogen peroxide caps putting more oxygen in your wife’s bloodstream was feeding you a bunch of garbage. On the other hand, it sounds like your wife is having some serious health problems. I can understand the temptation to self-treat. The fact that she’s getting worse though means that she really needs a good medical workup from a real physician. So far as lupus goes, in most cases, a negative ANA would rule it out (at least on presentation). There are actually a lot of people with lupus who do convert to having a negative ANA after treatment. About 95% though were ANA positive at the time of diagnosis. This is not to say that lupus can’t be diagnosed with a low positive ANA. (It would be helpful if you posted what her titer was.) Doctors may use an ANA test to rule out lupus as well as to see if some other type of autoimmune disease is a possibility. ANA can be positive with a wide variety of conditions including some viruses, in a few normal individuals, and as the result of some medications. If the ANA is positive and there’s reason to suspect some type of autoimmune disorder, they will usually order other antibody tests and labwork. The whole process can be very long and complicated….and frustrating, I’m sorry to say. Still, you’ve got to hang in there and keep pushing for them to try to figure out what’s going on because it sounds like your wife has some kind of illness. Don’t give up. Sandra

Hello Mr. Velez, I know what you’re going through. I had a similar experience before I was Dx’d with Reiter’s Syndrome. Anyway, I read your post and figured I would let you know of something else you might check out. We have a couple of groups going for the Spondyloarthropathies. Reiter’s Syndrome is one of them. All is free of charge. I’ll paste a info file on them below. The second one we call "INA" has a private forum for people with Lupus too. Hope they help. snip——— If your looking for one we have two we can offer. Both are free of charge. For the Spondyloarthropathies: Reiter’s Syndrome (Reactive Arthritis), Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, IBD, and all they may bring. Uveitis, Iritis, Conjunctivitis etc. Ankylosing Spondylitis AKA: Morbus Bechterew, Marie Strumpell. May also be referred to as Spondyloarthritis or Spondylitis. Reiter’s Syndrome AKA: Reactive Arthritis, Arthritis Urethritica, Blennorrheal Idiopathic Arthritis, Conjunctivo-Urethro-Synovial Syndrome, Feissinger-Leroy-Reiter Syndrome, Polyarthritis Enterica Ruhr’s Syndrome, Urethro-Oculo-Articular Syndrome, Venereal Arthritis, Waelsch’s Syndrome. INA below also for other rare diseases. RISG.ORG with a list server with over 500 members. Our most popular communication forum is our private list server. It delivers all the messages right to your email box. What’s a list server? Our list server is a communications tool that we use to communicate world wide about the Spondyloarthropathies. You send an email to the list address and it makes how ever many copies there are members in the group and emails it our to them. They of course can do the same. You can set your list subscription up in one of two ways depending on how you would like to receive the messages. 1. Individual Postings (by default). You will receive the messages as soon as the member sends them to the list server. 2. Digest Form. Since there are an average of 20 to 30 posts daily you can choose to receive posts in digest form. You will only receive one email a day at 9 PM PST. The digest will contain all the days messages in a book form. Instructions on how to choose the digest form will be included in your welcome message you’ll receive when you signup. With a subscription to our private list server you’ll also have access to our archives. Our archives hold over 25,000 messages. These messages are on all aspects of the Spondyloarthropathies, symptoms, and medications etc. that have been sent through our list the last few years. They are all searchable by word or phrase. http://www.risg.org/ And INA or "I’m not alone" Web discussion forums. Web discussion forums on rare diseases. This site is dedicated to helping those with common afflictions help each other. Using wwwthreads 5.4 Outside of the registration wall you’ll see a few discussion forums, but when you register you will have access to all forums. To register we only require a user name and a current email address. Our server will email you a temporary password to verify your active email address. We do not sell or otherwise divulge our members email addresses to anyone. You’ll even receive your own control panel. With this you’ll be able to set your own options such as email, password, preferences, number of shown threads, languages, colors, Subscribe / Unsubscribe from receiving board posts by email, change message notifications. You’ll even be able to have a small picture of yourself on each of your post. You will not receive any email from INA (except a rare notice from its founder) to your private email address unless you choose that option in your control panel. If you choose you can have your choice of any or all forums send you a digest form every night of all it’s posts. Send other registered members PRIVATE messages from your control panel. You can even see who else is on line. Unless in their control panel they chose to be invisible. You can upload pictures from your computer to the forum. Setup your own poll so members can go to your post to vote. With each post you have 48 hours after you post to delete or edit your post. You have complete control of your subscription. There is just too much to explain here. The best this is just go over there and play around with it for a while. We hope you enjoy and get much information and support from these forums. http://www.imnotalone.org/ Both are the founders personal form of Christian witness and as such it can expected that many of its members will also reflect that belief. anyone feel free to correct me but I believe that I did hear something about glucosamine being problematic for diabetes or something??? But in general it’s considered a safe supplement. sorry, I can’t remember exactly.. my dog and my husband are both on Fish Oil and it has helped them both tremendously – i can’t get myself into the habit but should. these are the omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown by clinical study to be not only very safe, but healthy in several aspects. *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. Yes, I believe the wording is "increases insulin resistance" which includes diabetes, but really can affect anyone (hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia), IIRC. http://www.uoguelph.ca/~rsingh/glucosamine.htm http://www.arthritis-free.com/faq.html It actually contains glucose, which seems a problem for me in many foods. (but I don’t have diabetes) http://www.drwhitaker.com/nc/news_ddrw_glucosdiabetes_2-01.php (insulin resistance). Newly diagnosed and borderline diabetics considering glucosamine supplements should be careful to get the appropriate tests before, during, and after their usage. <snip> I would therefore expect if someone had diabetes in their family history, that this supplement should be avoided. And otherwise, they (and others who have intermittent sugar metabolism problems) should be restricting their dietary sugar intake (including starches) directly in opposite of how much glucosamine that they intend to take daily. JMO J http://www.whiplash101.com/glucosam.htm Glucosamine Sulfate? Are sulfates a problem in autoimmune? I was trying to find this info for my brother. Response:
Dear Mr.& Mrs. Velez, I don’t know that I can be of any particular help. I see that others have replied and given some medical suggestions. I too would wonder if a CBC was done. It would be important to know the details of that. For instance, if the red blood cells are megaloblastic; it would indicate pernicious anemia, which could definetely cause neurological problems. That is just one of my blood problems. I am doubtful about the natural remedies. That is something that really has to be researched. They may do more harm than good. I know that glucosamine works for dogs. It takes quite a while, but there is noticeable inprovement in mobility. There is no placebo effect, because they just don’t know. It is harmless as far as side effects. first, highly recommend reviewing posts from this group on google groups. there has been very recent discussion about ANA titres and what they really mean (or don’t mean). >They say that >it could be Rheumatoid arthritis, though the test for that showed a >"negative".
and it could be any number of other things. Was a CBC done? Urinalysis? SMAC? Were diabetes and other possible causes of neuropathy ruled out? sounds like she needs some more work-up if those were not done. She may need to see a neurologist as this may not be joint pain but neuropathy. Though the swelling in the hands points to arthritis like conditions. A bone scan may be necessary given the hip is involved. >BUT . . . , what about all the limping, and the pain, and >the fatigue, and the weakness, and her feeling tired constantly? The >doctor gave a prescription of VIOXX which is not doing a cinch.
Is she feeling *worse* on the Vioxx – the COX-II inhibitors (VIOXX and Celebrex) can have a negative effect if she is sensitive to sulfa drugs and some with lupus or other autoimmune problems can not tolerate them at all. >shared this whole thing with someone at work (I’m a nursing technician >in a very large retirement complex). >They suggested naturopathy and wholistic treatments. I don’t know the value of HP frankly. Not something I would take – I mean, we use it on the dog to get her to vomit if she ingests something dangerous (when she was a puppy anything that hit the floor – including some of my meds with my fumbling fingers) was inhaled by the dog. Aside from the fact that ingesting oxygen into your stomach seems a very inefficient way to get oxygen to the blood (this is why we have lungs – they are the machine designed to absorb oxygen). That sounds condescending – I don’t mean it to be – I simply have very little trust in this particular treatment but have only a "gut feel" to base that lack of trust on. If someone wants to set me straight on the *science* of this treatment than I hope they will do so. >41 years of age, Cherokeean-Irish.
women of color do have a higher incidence of lupus and similar disease. I don’t know if that applies in general (ie., including Native American) or if it is more restricted to Hispanic, African-American and Eastern ethnicity. >Please, can anyone give us any >feedback? for how I got "into" this issue rather than retelling my story here, check my website and read what I experienced. I have used only alternative therapies that I feel have been shown to definitively help (Omega-3 Fatty acids, meditation). REcently started costochondroitin/glucosamine – too soon to tell. If any of the supplements she is taken are claimed to "balance" or "enhance" the immune system – she is probably doing herself more harm than good if this is in fact related to an immune problem. Find out what a "slight trace" was on the ANA and have it retested in a few weeks. 1:80 up to 1:320 is often considered false positive – but shouldn’t be in light of the pain and obvious symptoms she is having. Even a low positive ANA should be grounds for further investigation if she is in this much pain. IMO. be sure to get all of her test values (a copy of the report from the lab) so you can evaluate them or have another doctor evaluate them – some docs will toss aside a low or high here or there because they simply don’t know what they’re looking at). Was this doctor a qualified Rheumatologist? if not, than you definitely need to keep looking into the problem. Contact your nearest LFA group (check www.lupus.org) and talk to them about qualified rheumies in your area. my URL and the FAQ URL for this group are in my signature file. I recommend the FAQ for many of your questions as well as for many URLs (section 5) regarding SLE and related illnesses. Included are the LFA site, about.com’s lupus site, Joanne’s site and Andy’s site. – all of which have excellent information. e’d and p’d to ensure receipt. feel free to ask any lab questions here – lots of knowledgeable folks here. take care, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. Health to all~ My concern here is for my wife. Back in May she began experiencing a "come and go" pain in her right hip, leg and foot. Now the pain is more of a "Came and Stayed". Her fingers are all swollen. We went to her doctor, who had the ANA test done on her. The result was (according to her words) a slight trace. Nothing to be concerned about. They say that it could be Rheumatoid arthritis, though the test for that showed a "negative". BUT . . . , what about all the limping, and the pain, and the fatigue, and the weakness, and her feeling tired constantly? The doctor gave a prescription of VIOXX which is not doing a cinch. Then I shared this whole thing with someone at work (I’m a nursing technician in a very large retirement complex). They suggested naturopathy and wholistic treatments. They told me that the use of Hydrogen Peroxide caps would help, because is a form of oxygen and the blood system would benefit if she added more of it into her stream. This combination contains hydrogen peroxide, carbamide, maltodextrin and magnesium stearate. Besides that she is using Glucosamine and the Brazilian bark tree (Pau D’Arco).
