Why would you even want to??? Noni

Question:

Give me a break her KCat,  that was more than 2 cents worth haha I agree with all your above points in your posts and I myself am supplementing with high vitamins from a well know health store…so I am not knocking the use of any supplements but wondered why anyone would want to boost their immune system as such…I agree that this balancer thing has gotten out of hand and there is not real down right proof. I also say if you want to try things go with the doc and get their opinions on it also.. I have indulged in the use of magnetic shoe insoles and wrist bands, this was before and during the worst flare of my life and was diagnosed at the time with lupus and MCTD…all I can say is I have not had one doc agree with the use of these, and really they did make my feet feel a little more shall I say warm…but that was the feeling… As for anything else, heck I was game and tried a few things. When one is in pain, you will try anything that may state it will help you…Just walk the mall at Christmas time and see all the little booths that make clains to heal and you will know what I mean….If it works for you I say good for you…if not well that is your waist of money not mine, but as you read the above, I did waist my money big time LOL But all I can say is I tried it and unlike Mikey, I did not like it…so that is Life… PS and not the cereal either LOL Janers

I was led to believe that Noni is an immune system balancer not stimulator. Similar to the effects of certain elements of cellery. It is also supposed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants. Its other function is supposed to help rebuild cell membranes. None of the above is proven though – but I thought it might be worth a try. Dunk

I keep hearing this term "balancer" – I was a lab technician for an immunology group (studying HIV and how the immune system creates scar tissue in cardiac ischemia reperfusion injury – IOW, what happens after a heart attack and the heart is reperfused with blood much of that blood containing very activated wbcs).  I was there for 2.5 years and the most important thing I can say I learned is the immune system isn’t a scale upon which we can "balance" low activity vs. high activity.  it is a very complex system – believed by many to be the true focal point of the body’s many ills because any injury, illness, infection, stress, affront, receives *some* reaction via the immune system.  Likewise most normal (healthy) body functions are in some way tended to by one or more of the cells or proteins of the immune system. so….. all that comes down to – while I’m not putting Noni juice (or echinacea or any other such treatment) down, I do take issue with the phrase "immune balancing".  It is as vague and meaningless to me as "transfer factor" (another so-called "cure" for all your ills but I won’t go into the reason why transfer factor is also vague and meaningless).   Ultimately – *most* of us, Janers, would do well to stay away from anything that is said to "enhance, balance or stimulate" the immune system for the very basic reason that we don’t know what that means for us as individuals.  *However* – many people can take these supplements and not experience any problems and may actually experience some benefits. My sister took echinacea for a while, I don’t know if she still does.  She is however, very sick.  She felt that it was making things better for her.  I have no way to judge that and no way to know if she is still on it – this was several years ago. And without lengthy studies there is no way to know if these "balancers" are actually helping or not – sometimes we just get better at the same time we start a new treatment (including traditional medication/therapy) and it has nothing to do with the new treatment. >Its other function is supposed to help rebuild cell membranes.

It would be nice to know how it does this.  I don’t suppose there is any biochemical study out there showing how it does this? Technically, having enough phospholipids in your body would play a role in rebuilding cell membranes.  so again, I find this a vague statement with little meaning (though certainly not your fault, Dunk, I realize you are quoting what others have claimed) >None of the above is proven though – but I thought it might be worth a try.

I have to agree – If you want to try something then I think you should.  There are a couple of important aspects about any such change. a) notify your doctor b) keep track of changes in your body (good or bad) when you begin the medication/supplement/treatment (that includes non-invasive treatments such as yoga, etc.) c) make sure that the supplement does not contain *proven* problematic chemicals (such as alfalfa).   I myself am considering a rather expensive supplement for my daughter and I. Neither of us can get in the habit of chunking down those huge vitamins when we already have 6 or more other pills to take per day yet neither of us has a sufficient diet.  So, while the stuff is expensive it is about the same cost of the vitamins themselves and may actually be better absorbed as it is a powder you can put on foods, (I don’t know that for a fact re: absorption).  I’m going to keep a detailed symptom diary for the duration. so… that’s my .02+ again. :) *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.  The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’

I can not understand why anyone with an over active immune system would even want to drink this stuff in the first place…this noni juice stimulates the immune system into over drive, And from what I have been told and checked out is LUPUS itself makes the immune system over active anyhow…. Am I stupid to think that you would want to stimulate it that much more…. OK, please someone explain it. Heck aren’t you over stimulated enough by all these posts…LOL Come on now smile folks, Janers
