There’s a new worm out today or yesterday The "Bagle" or "Beagle"  (attachments apparently) if one Googles those two words, the news articles at the top of the search provide news bulletins about them. Symantec is aware of them, but I haven’t checked their web page. J

Note, however, that Norton seem to have ceased supporting the "2002" and "2003" versions of their software, and the "2004" version is advertised as working with Windows XP, XP Pro, 2000 Pro, Me, 98 (provided you have IE installed at version 5.01 or higher) but NOT with Windows 95, NT, 2000-Server, XP-Server, or XP-64bit. ;-) I have 2002 – and as yet I’ve received no information that the updates are not working and supported.  Looks like something to check out – again.

Nor have I been send any info. What happened was that my first update of this year "updated the updater" (=LiveUpdate) which then produced a system error: something like "error in GetLongNumber in kernel32.dll". That sounds horribly fundamental :( So I bought 2004 versions, only to discover that while the box says on the outside what it DOES work with, the manual inside also says what it DOES NOT work with. Like, my opsys. I then checked the Symantec web site, but cannot find any reference to the 2002 or 2003 products nor any recommendations for what they suggest for NT4 users. -- Andy [Chair, N E Lupus Group] See http://www.northeastlupus.org.uk for more!

Hi there.. recently a fellow ASL post-er received a virus email from what *looked* like my address.  But was not.  This means, in all likelihood that the virus is on the system of a mutual email acquaintence.  In addition, today I received what I’m assuming was a virus – did not get a warning about it but it was supposedly from "lupus-l" – Hamline’s old lupus mailing list that has been defunct for some time now.  Based on that, I’m also assuming that it’s possible the person with the infected system was also on lupus-l at one time. if you do not have anti-virus software, please get it.  I know it’s not cheap but the pain of reformatting and rebuilding a system is just not worth the $30 you’re saving.  If you have broadband, make sure you have a firewall. And keep your virus s/w updated – new bugs are out constantly. I use Norton which automatically updates each time Norton adds a new virus to their list.  If you don’t have automatic updating – get it if at all possible. if you simply can not get AV s/w – then learn to delete anything with an attachment that you aren’t expecting. If it’s important or from a friend, they’ll send it again.  Write them, ask if they sent something and if it is valid before opening. If you use Outlook, keep the Preview pane closed so that scrolling through emails doesn’t automatically execute a virus. just some advice.  take it or leave it. if you send me an attachment – let me know before hand in a non-attachment email.  otherwise, I won’t read it.
