I just wanted to reintroduce myself since I didn’t really do so the first time I wrote here.  My name is Mike.  My wife Kathy and I are both 24 years old and have been married now for about 4 1/2 months.  A few weeks ago I wrote to this NG about Kathy discovering she was pregnant with us finding out the next day that she has lupus.  This is just an update concerning what we’ve gone through since that point.  After a couple of trips to the rheumatologist, we have been told that they are about 90% sure it is lupus.  She has tested positive for at least two antigens that are characteristics of lupus.  A total of 3 is a definite thing.  Through a few other tests they have rules out any neurological involvement since she has experienced weakness in her right hand.  As far as the pregnancy is concerned, tomorrow will officially be the tenth week of the term.  With three ultrasounds and pictures to prove it, the baby is now about an inch long and you can clearly see the head, legs, and butt of this beautiful life.  With Kathy going through all the nausea and tiredness of this period of the pregnancy, it has been rare for us to both be awake and active at the same time (with the exception of the two wonderful weeks of vacation we just finished spending together).  Anyway, just thought anyone out there would like to know how things are going.   Mike

I’m pleased to see you and Kathy seem to be doing well.  I think I mentioned last time you posted that I too discovered I had lupus with pregnancy – although that was years ago, and I was so sick that the foetus didn’t survive. I share your joy at seeing the ultrasound with heartbeat – that was my experience on Tuesday (to my great relief, after a few scares the week before). Does Kathy have antiphospholipid antibodies?  Or platelet problems (ITP or thrombocytopenia)?  Because I do, I’ve had to increase my prednisolone and aspirin doses, and started heparin injections in the last couple of days. These things are a challenge, but greatly increase my chances of going to term. I hope you both continue to do well… and am happy to provide moral support.  Keith and I are both older than you (almost 40 and 38 respectively) but we can understand your joy.  Keep your spririts up!  It’s the positive attitude that helps more than any diagnostic test or medicine! That makes us both pretty glad to hear about your 4 year old with NO complications.  It has helped us relax just a little more.  She is also taking baby aspirin as requested by her doctor (ecotrin in fact).  This Easter weekend her joint pain has been pretty much nonexistant with just the normal bout of morning sickness every now and then. I am so happy for you and your wife.  I  miscarried several of my pregnancies because of having lupus.  Even though I did not produce antiphospholipid antibodies a clot would form in the umbilical cord and the fetus would literally starve to death.  Which my doctor explained is common with lupus. To prevent this I had to take a baby aspirin every day.  It worked! I now have a beautiful 4 year old born with no complications. I pray every thing will go well for you two.  Being pregnant and having lupus can be hard on you mentally and physically but the reward is worth it and then some.
