travel and germs

Question:

Hi all.  I’m hoping some of you have had experience traveliing with lupus. In fact, I hope lots of you have traveled with lupus.  Might as well rest in a European city as at home, eh?  Actually, I did this.  Marc and I went to London, where he spent his days in conferences and I rested in a paid-for-by-somebody-else terrific hotel room, very posh, reading, listening to horses clip-clopping by during the day, no kids.  At night he took me by wheelchair to the plays.  ah, wasn’t bad at all. But I ramble.  Luckily, we have 2 more such situations coming up.  One is to Ireland, another to Costa Rica.  Both entail air travel, which means recirculating air.  My relatives often come back from a vacation from the flu they caught on the flight.  Has anyone found a way to fight that? Costa Rica is another situation.  I just read a scary article saying that lupies can be laid low by opportunistic bugs, like parasites, fungus, and something else.  I figger that a cloud forest is full of those buggers.  I hate to ask this, but should I not go?  And if I do, is there a way to protect myself? I await your answers with trepidation… :0) Hugs, Barbara

Response:

When in doubt buy bottled water. Do not drink beverages made with ice because the ice is made with local water if the water is in doubt.  Ireland should not be a problem. The second thing that everyone should be aware of: is not to touch your hands to your eyes, nose or mouth. Most "germs" are actually transmitted by picking them up on your hands and transferring them to a moist orifice on your body. Very few "germs" are airborne and very few pollens are airborne. TB is airborne – but I don’t want to scare you because you can pick that up in the local grocery store. Might want talk to your doctor before going. He should be able to give you a few meds just in case you need them.  I traveled extensively as a kid and really only once came down with anything (in Bangkok but I had just come from Cambodia), other than a cold I picked up in Italy. I also had so many shots for all sorts of horrible things before traveling to many third world countries. I always had anti-diarrhea medicine, anti-nausea, and a half dozen other bottles of stuff just in case. Travel, have fun and use some common sense. Hi Barb.  if you are worried about the recirculated air, why not wear a disposible mask on the plane.  That way some one can say  "  Who was that masked woman ha ha.   Had to pun ya.  but it is worth a shot. Also you may want to buy this antibacterial hand wash that dries on contact,  It is great and you can put it in your purse or what ever you carry around, like a fanny pack.  For all who do not know what that is, it goes around your waist….Maybe also get some of that lotion that keeps the bugs away. As far as the flu from a plane, happened to me going to Vegas so now when I go away, I get antibiotics to bring along just in case.  doc will give me a prescription for like Keflex.  I only use themi if I get a persistant fever with the cold symptoms.  Zithromx is another good one, but some people say you can get a huge flair taking that one.  But if it a bacterial infection it really does the trick. Ask your doc about cortisone if you need to take some along and how to use it. See I am here this morning and already yakking to you.   Janers
