Lyndal, I was wondering if maybe you could explain a bit about the typical low wbc in Lupus. If the body’s defense system is in ‘hyperdrive’ so to speak, and so overly attacking, and therefore destroying our good cells too, then why would Lupies typically have a low wbc? Wouldn’t it be raised, since the body is attacking more strongly? -Sharon — Clear your mind, relax and float downstream. To email me, remove NOSPAM

Thank you Lyndal, I always feel a little guilty asking you about these things all the time. You come here for support and I feel it is a bit unfair to ask you these sorts of question. Yes, I am on 150mgs Imuran and only 5mgs pred. The rheumy wanted me on 10mgs, but I was non compliant. Oh, you did shed much light on the situation for me. Sometimes the doctors here don’t explain things well. It helps so much to have someone look at it, and put an explaination in writing such as you have done. You are a sweetheart. Thanks again. BJ-who’s blood is not such crud. Good evening all …the doctor is IN…remember that old Charlie Brown cartoon??? hee hee The blood seems a little less crud to me, BJ. The fluctuations are minor and if you consider that your entire blood is replaced every 100 days or so, its no surprise that its always a-changing. Do you take imuran or pred (or methotrexate) they can all cause that slightly low WBC and lymphocyte count – in fact thats what you want them to do. They drop your WBC and therefore slow down the autoimmune attack. My rheumy says if my WBC and lymphocyte count is normal then Im not on enough imuran. The drop in MCV makes me hope you are starting to win with the B12…but I guess a bit early to say. Overall…the normal HB is good news, and the WCC isn ot inthe danger zone. BJ, I really didn’t think your blood tests were really too bad at all, except the low wbc’s. But apparantly YOUR normals are not my normal here in OHIO. Hgb in those numbers to me are Greek, sorry people who are Greek, no offense meant. Are you feeling alright lady? I am doing pretty good, but having my own little flare, shall I say. Joints hurt bad, and tired. My sed rate was up but other blood work was ok, haven’t seen it but they told me over the phone, will get eye to eye tues LOL. I am now on double medrol of 8mg. That is 10mg of prednisone that it equals. My rheumy in cleveland told me that was fine to go up and down, like I do, since bone density is good again. But it is the only drug that helps me, and she and the rheumy here will not use Imuran yet, amen. I am a little concerned about my bruising but platelets are normal range, so I am wondering about clotting time and prothrombin times. We will see. OTHER wise I am busy with my mind and waiting to try the new Motor home out. Which we may just do sat and sun. HEY it is suppose to rain, but who the H cares right? We need rain. Getting the fall change in colors here starting too very pretty but early hugs janers

Hi Janers, I don’t think the blood work is all that bad either. I just don’t understand why they fluctuate so much from month to month when nothing else has changed with meds. The hemaglobin is reported as normal being g/l 120-160, if that helps you at all. I wonder if your bruising is from the pred, if your platelets are okay. I feel alright. It is just the profound fatigue that gets to me. The joint stuff is something I can manage. Hope you have a good weekend in that motor home. Sounds romantic. BJ-Sk. I am not a the Doctor but I have to say BJ, keep away from any infections of anyone with colds. If your white count is low then you are very suspectible to infections, and we don’t want you to cath something here Your MCV came down I see. Very good, wonder what happened there. Did they do a HBG. hemoglobin?? here we sit waiting on Doc L’s expertise. HELP here please, and thank you in advance janers

Hi Janers, Howyadoin? Yes, the changes in the blood work are puzzling. My meds have not been changed for a long time. My WBC has been as low as 2.3, but then went up. Now they are down to 2.7. The MCV is down , but the MCH is higher. My hemaglobin came in the 126 which is low normal. The normal range given is 120-160. Told you I had crud blood, didn’t I? huh, huh? Good Afternoon Everyone, I just got a print-out of my Sept 3 blood test. There have been some changes, and I don’t know the significance. Perhaps there is a doctor in the house <g> who would care to take a stab at it. Maybe someone else might know as well. WBC dropped from 3.1 to 2.7 (L) RBC dropped from 3.36 to 3.31 (L) MCV down from110.1 to 108.6 (still high) MCH up from 37.7 to 38.1 (H) HEMOCRIT down from 0.370 to 0.359 (L) LYMPHOCYTES remained at 0.7 (L) MONOCYTES dropped from 0.2 to 0.1 (L) PLATELETS-dropped by 20K, but still withing normal range. The neutrophils-absolute were marked normal at 1.8,as were the eos-0.1, and baso-0.0 Gosh, I hope I typed all that in correctly. Thoughts? BJ-Sk. Canada
