The only thing I remember specifically about my dad after his bypass surgery (they did the carotid thing separately) is that in the evening, hours after he’d come out of surgery, he still looked just plain gray in the face. Don’t be freaked by how old and wan your brother looks afterwards. Daddy also had to cough fairly often afterwards, but the coughing hurt his chest. (Gee, I wonder why?) A friend’s father was out chopping wood six weeks after his bypass. My dad was so tired that he went to a nursing home to recuperate. I’d guess people’s experiences vary a bit. We’ll pray. :-)

Response:

You are right about the differences in people but most folks I know that have had major heart surgery (bypass or valve) have come out of it feeling ten times better! Most have said they haven’t felt that good since they were in their 20’s. I guess it is just such a slow downhill ride most people never notice it until it is really bad. The other thing that often happens is one or more ribs tend to break while in surgery. So there is a whole lot more healing that is going on besides just the heart portion of the surgery. You do know they cut from the neck to at least the belly button? Then staple it all back together. Nasty scar! Bev "cwhite0714" <cwhite0…@fsi.net> wrote in message

Bev, I realize the part about cutting all that way down, we kidded john about being able to wear the old fashioned men bathing suit, from the 30s and he was not happy with that.  Our family thrives on joking and believe me we try to lift his spirits too. Being a nurse myself, then darn open heart stuff is way new to me.  But I do know a little and like I told my sister, It is not my job to explain things to him, the nurses I am sure will do that.  I just hope his wife and oldest son is there to hear it.  OR they will be shocked to death, when they see him.  I have prepared my one sis about it and she had no idea so that tells you what people really know about open heart. thanks for your email and for your concern. stay happy, hugs janers

Response:

Just make sure you take care of yourself through all this!!! You can’t be a rock if you are busy flaring! Didn’t you know that scars on guys are sexy? Of course on females they are :-(  !!! Bev "janers" <rojak…@bright.net> wrote in message

Hey Bev, scares on woman are sexy.   I got 5 little ones from Gall bladder laproscopy surgery.  Only problem is when my belly sticks out, so does the little blips where they popped me open.  Just like little bulges on a tire when it wear out haha.. I am fine and believe me taking care of myself.  My bp is down on this new medication, after 6 different kinds IT should be LOL And I nap like a good girl too. John’s surgery for his carotid is now at 7pm this evening.  Darn, tell me why again they do surgery so late in the day LOL. I just talked to John on the phone, and they got him doped up pretty good. Dropped the phone when talking to him, his only problem HE WANTS SOME FOOD..and he is crabby that it will be days before he gets anything decent.  That is John Boy.  so I know he will do fine when he is in a bitchy mood.  That is the way all 5 of us are LOL So if I am bitchy, send food.  Especially ice cream, preferrably fat free Meijer brand. Only kind that don’t leave after taste. man did I get this post messed up..LOL thanks again. where is BJ?   I am worried, have you heard from her? hugs janers

Response:

Janners, My Aunt had the carotid surgery about a year ago.  She was 70 and all went well with the surgery and the recovery. Will be keeping all of you in our prayers and thoughts.  But know that everything will be just fine for John!!! Hugs, Sherry

Response:

Janer….. Will be keeping your brother in our thoughts and prayers…….as well as the rest of the family. My Mama had the same surgery several years ago.She did complain loud and long about the food!! No seasoning, no butter and yada yada. so I took butter flavored Molly-Mcbutter, Equal,  Mrs Dash, lemon juice, and a low-sodium salt to the hospital. She still "fussed", but it did taste better to her. Except the yellow-Jello LOL Their chest incision does hurt. And they do encourage them to cough following surgery. Offer him a pillow to hold over his chest before he coughs ( or sneezes) The only time she looked really bad was after the surgery, while in the recovery room. However, the nurses had told us what was happening each step of the way. I am sure you will be kept informed, and told what to expect too. Things have really improved  with this type procedure, especially  in the last year or so. barbtoo east tennessee

Oh. I forgot. Janers, When my friend was at the hospital, I could only go see him every other day. The stress, lupus, etc. just made me so tired, I couldn’t really take care of him and I told the drs. not to let him come home so soon. But they didn’t listen to me, so I got worse for awhile, and i went in pschic hosp for 3 weeks rest. I enjoyed almost all of it. glad you have his family around, i didn’t. but I survived! Dear Janers, I had a boyfriend who had open-heart quad by-pass.  for a month he was like a child in grown-up body. kinda drunk-like, also little clots of blood went to his brain and made mini-strokes. he started having problems w/short-term memory. On the bright side; he stopped smoking and started gaining weight that he should have had before. he was only on respirator for a few days and didn’t stay in hospital long enough for me!(mine was real grumpy anyway) My prayers to you  also check with the nurses, they must have some things i haven’t mentioned. love and hugs, elfgirl "janers" <rojak…@bright.net> wrote in message

Saw my brother, who is very upset and angry right now.  But who can blame him right?? His carotid surgery is tomorrow and they still do not have a time for that but sometime tomorrow evening.  John looked at his watch and made a comment, "probably tomorrow night at 8pm cause my watch stopped at 8:15"   Well that did not help his attitude or mine. LOL  He was allowed out of bed but had some pain too this afternoon, so they slapped a nitro gylcerine patch on him too. I did see the pictures of his heart and the blockage, the main one is left coronary artery at 80%, so Hope to heck they get this fixed.  that is scheduled  for thursday now pending the one tomorrow. Anyone have someone in the family with open heart that they can tell me what to expect?  I have no clue here but know that he will be on a respirator for a while.. that someone told me. Keep sending them good vibes to ohio. I am fine and last week again, they changed my bp medication.  Now on covera Hs 180mg and it has taken the pounding way down.  Plus the bp.  So maybe just maybe this one will work for me.  Have to take it at bedtime only.  Another damn OOPS pill to remember to take. Got my medrol back to my normal dose too, so cross fingers people this is gonna stay pretty good. I realize stress is not a good thing, but I thrive on stress sometimes esp when it comes to helping those I love.  Guess that is the nursey mode that hits there.  LOL Hope you all are doing ok, and I will keep checking in and checking the posts. hugs to all janers

Yes, and no. The strides they have made in the last few years has been so great I cannot tell you what to expect today! Most hospitals now have step down units within CCU. I think it is safe to say that he will be flat on his back for days. No getting up! Lots of monitor stuff but mostly now it is a little finger thing and maybe a BP cuff. Sand bag on leg, cath, and a few other goodies I suspect still exist. Once he steps down it will be much easier for him and the family. He might be allowed to sit up and maybe the cath will come out. Open heart is scary for you and him but it is routine for the docs and nurses. Call the hospital first thing in the morning and ask to speak to someone who will tell you exactly what to expect. Hospitals have all these wonderful PR staff people to inform you off all sorts of stuff. BTW, he won’t be driving himself for weeks!!! And he’ll probably be home in 5 days.
