The (Mythical) Aspartame Disease Which Is Blamed for Nearly Every Illness Known to Man

Question:

Yes, I know I will likely receive many irate missives from True Believers (or Non Believers as in this case) — for daring to stick my admittedly rather large proboscis where it supposedly does not belong. However I find the topic of urban legends and Net hoaxes to dupe the clueless to be of more than passing personal interest. I never fail to be amazed at what uninformed people will fall for. For your hopeful edification, enlightenment, and amusement concerning the aspartame "controversy", please see: http://urbanlegends.tqn.com/library/blasp.htm OK Betty et al. — lets have it. None of us is ever going to change our opinions — so why even bother??? You have a jihad underway. I don’t. Who then is crazier? James D. (Diet soda) Milton

Response:

Hey James; Thanks for the reminder about thinking independently. Unfortunately, with so much information ‘out there’ these days, it’s pretty difficult to tell the good from the bad.  Sometimes ignorance IS bliss:  I try to stick with my common sense, and to ignore the latest reports on what causes cancer (etc.).  I DID cut out diet colas during my pregnancies (not wanting to find out in 20 years that aspartame WAS dangerous to developing fetuses) but I did not condemn my girlfriends who didn’t. However, I’ve got to wonder after reading that article at urbanlegends.  I know two women–they were friends and VERY heavy diet cola drinkers–who, within a short time of each other, were diagnosed with lupus.  I know that one of them quit drinking diet cola, and no longer seems to suffer.  Who knows. — Kath From here on my branch I can choose to plunge or soar. I think I shall sit a while longer. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yes, I know I will likely receive many irate missives from True Believers (or Non Believers as in this case) — for daring to stick my admittedly rather large proboscis where it supposedly does not belong.
