that new Pan American album

Question:

I think the This House..  one was a duet with Marc Almond wasn’t it,   from around 86?    That’s the one.  One of those "couples having a row" duets, with a Marc  Riley illustration on the cover.  Well worth tracking down. — Andrew Norman, Leicester, England http://www.le.ac.uk/engineering/nja/

Response:

I’ve gotten some good promos this week, though. The new (and last) 1.8.7 record, ‘The Cities Collection’ is a pretty head slammin record of jungle tunes.

What kind of jungle are we talking about here? It would be nice to come across some good *current* jungle again, after so long of mining through the past. Any idea of what Big Bud’s album is like? I’d dismissed him as just another GLR artist, but I came across a song of his from 96 (‘Millenium’) which was mighty fine. Also heard some good things about the new Matrix and (long-awaited) Bukem albums. Tim

says… And let me put a plug in for the new Touch & Go (and related) releases right here. The new albums by the Mekons, Dirty Three and Giant Sand are all wonderful. In fact, the Mekons album is more than wonderful. Its amazing. Their best in a long time.

I’m a little late on new releases. Just recently I’ve discovered great albums from Boom Boom Satellites, Come (1998, I think), Baby Namboos and Velma. I’ve gotten some good promos this week, though. The new (and last) 1.8.7 record, ‘The Cities Collection’ is a pretty head slammin record of jungle tunes. Also a new Ersatz Audio compilation  featuring lots of Kraftwerkian-synth bands and electro outfits in full retro swing. Listening to this record is like being back in the early 80’s. I really like the full length Arovane album. Like Autechre on warp-drive (no pun intended). Thinking man’s techno. I’m also rapping my head around the latest Progression Sessions and find myself still loving LTJ’s sound. Each of these records are so carefully produced and good on the ears. Oh, and for the hip-hop heads out there, Hip Hop Slam has just re-issued Live Human’s ‘Monostereosis’ (originally on Fat Cat). Live hip hop made with several types of bass (stand up, electric, double, etc), several types of drums and 2 Technics. Really chilled out stuff, sometimes on the hyper-jazzy tip. Amon Tobin and Roots Fans should check out the skills involved here. —                           on my stereo: Boom Boom Satellites – Out Loud (wish I discovered this sooner…what a killer record).

Talking of the Mekons have you heard the last Sally Timms solo album yet?  It sounds amazing (as are all records with STs on) but i don’t think it’s out here in the UK yet (i’ve just had to order a Dutch import). I like Sally’s _To the Land of Milk and Honey_ a little more than _Cowboy Sally’s Twilight Lament_, but it’s hard to go wrong with either album.  I’d love to find some of her earlier solo stuff.  Anyone got any lines on any of these titles:

I’ll second that. The new album is really good, but not as good as the previous album. The new Mekons is better than any of their last several albums though. -ML COMPTON-

Cheers for the info, Milk and Honey is great so hopefully the new one will turn up eventually.  Certainly my fav singer around. Sally Timms             Somebody’s Rocking My Dreamboat    T.I.M. Sally Timms   (EP)      This House is a House of Trouble   T.I.M. Sally Timms             Butcher’s Boy (EP)                 T.I.M.

I think the This House.. one was a duet with Marc Almond wasn’t it, from around 86?  Never seen a copy though (but i’d love to hear it). No idea on the others i’m afraid. More records to hunt down now :-) Gareth

While we’re on the T&G tip, I’ll give two .50 caliber butt-plugs to the new Skull Kontrol EP, and that Jesus Lizard collection.  The Skull Kontrol should appeal to fans of late 70’s artpunk/early 80’s avant-hardcore (basically they’re like the Gang of Four meets Void).  Ex-Circus Lupus/Monorchid people IIRC, more similar to the latter than the former. And you all know about Jesus Lizard. Kris.

I noticed the Mekons had a new album coming out.  I was figuring on including that on my list of CDs to get with some of my tax refund money.  Guess I’ll make that a *must* now. I’ve seen Sally Timms twice now. In ‘95 at the Mercury Lounge in NYC and in ‘99 at Brownies as part of the Bloodshot barbecue – the Waco Brothers finished out that afternoon and were just amazing (Chip "Wild Thing" Taylor joined them for that song and another mid-show).  Sally was wonderful each time I saw her.  I saw the Mekons and Langford’s Skull Orchard in ‘98.  All good. It’s been a while since I’ve done any online searching.  I should try that, too… :-) There are plenty of female singers who float my boat, but Sally’s been one of my favorites ever since I heard my first Mekons album. np: Waco Brothers – Waco World (I was gonna throw on _Cowboy Sally’s                     Twilight Lament_, but it must be at home) ——-                                             Murph                                             Michael A. : Also, I’m getting a bit sick of the post-rock tradition of being too : good to have liner notes or much album artwork.  It only serves to : accentuate the anonymous nature of the music.  It leaves me wondering – : is this album "subtle" or just "boring"?  I should think I’d be able to : tell the difference, being as big a fan as I am of stuff like Windy&Carl : or whatever. What notes are there to have? Bands like Rachel’s include poetry, but if there are no lyrics, really, how much could there be? Bands aren’t in the business of offering commentary on their music – they’re in the business of making music. Maybe you’re just reacting to the difficulty of describing music when it’s not laid out for you in text, or with images to refer to and identify with. Hey! It’s not my fault you’re a hick. And I still say that if your record store sucks, don’t give them your business. I assume you have a computer. Try logging on to one of the indie distribution sites like Parasol. I buy stuff from them all the time, or I did until I arranged a deal for them to distribute directly to my store. But they have a lot of stuff I couldn’t find elsewhere. Don’t think that just because I live in a big city I can find everything I want here. I do a lot of shopping from online sites. -ML COMPTON-
