New Skete Monasteries in Cambridge, New York will train a service dog. I am waiting for a German Shepherd puppy who will be trained as a search and rescue dog. I will receive the puppy at 3 months of age and then I will return it to New Skete when it is 6 months of age for training. We live in Colorado now, and we will have to fly the dog back to New Skete. This past May, I had the opportunity to care for a guide dog for 3 months while his blind owner summitted Mt. Everest. This dog is the most incredible animal I have ever known. I suffer from Lupus and my husband has MS. The dog went every where with us. The bond and spiritual connection we developed with this dog is beyond words. Now that his owner is back and the dog has gone "back to work" I don’t get to spend as much time with him. Our health has improved and I will cherish this time I had with this dog forever. I can’t wait until we get our own puppy! Here’s the link to New Skete. There is also a guide dog school in Conn. called Fidelco which trains dogs for the blind. They also have a web site. While talking with an acquaintence recently, we discussed service dogs. Does anyone know if there are any laws (in the U.S.) that require that a person wanting a service dog would have to get it from a service dog organization or can someone get a puppy and have the dog trained themselves? Is some sort of certification required? I’m getting a golden retriever puppy in less than a month (was on the waiting list for a pup from this litter for a VERY long time) and it sure would be handy to be able to have my own dog trained and be able to bring him along for times when I drop things and feel like I’m going to fall over when I need to pick something up. I just don’t know if it’d cause a problem in the grocery store! Sue
