Question:
Hi ! I would very mch like to hear your thoughts on pregnancy and Lupus. I am considering having another child . As a matter of fact I really want one but I have had such dfficulty with the Lupus after the last one. All my girlfriends think I am crazy. I am so conflicted. The Lupus is still active but under more control ( if there is such a thing ) than before. I have lung involvement. Thank you Your thoughts would be appreciated. florida amy

Amy, If you search old discussions, there were quite a few posts on this subject a few months ago. If I remember correctly, there were quite a few women with lupus that had difficult pregancies, and gave birth to healthy babies. I think there were a few that actually felt better when they were pregnant. It seems your previous pregnancy should be some guide in this. I was just recently diagnosed, but my rheumy thinks I have had SLE for many years. I had preterm labor and was on extended bedrest with both of my pregancies. It was worth every second of discomfort – but now that I know I have SLE (and am 8 years older), I won’t be trying again. My husband and I wanted to have more children, but I couldn’t get healthy enough to go for it. Now I know why, but it’s been a very painful decision to give up that dream of a big family. This is a big decision. Your OB/GYN, rheumy and primary care should be consulted before you make up your mind. The Lupus Book has a section on SLE and pregnancy that has good scientific information. As we all know, though, the decision to have a baby isn’t always made on the basis of science. By the way, how does your partner feel? My hubby would rather keep our family the way it is than risk my health and the health of a new child. Best of everything to you, this is a toughie. Try Deja News at http://www.deja.com/home_ps.shtml (that’s the official version) or http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/deja.html (some people like that form better — I do). It’s a web-based news service that archives newsgroup posts pretty much forever. Put something like pregnan* (to get pregnant, pregnancy, etc.) in the Enter Keywords box and alt.support.lupus in the Forum (Newsgroup) box.
