If he is an "only" he may just need some company. Have you considered getting him a playmate? -=JR=- (Owned by four Siamese) — "To live in the past is a tired thing" E Carl, Navaho 1924 – 1943

on the table when I’m doing paperwork. Any piece of paper I need, she has to sit on it at that very moment! It’s a vast right paw conspiracy!  Mine does too! to our (meow) health kelly

This sounds worse than an average cat! Has he tooth trouble?  If not, try providing an "official chew-me thing" – maybe a rope on a pole – and every time you find him chewing move him to it.  You could coat the rope with something he likes. I have also seen something for use in the garden to discourage cats from relieving themselves in your flowerbeds – I think it was a pepper or chili spray. Try spraying your cables with that.  Generally it’s a stick’n'carrot approach. — Andy For Austrian philately <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps/> For Lupus <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/> For my other interests <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/>

My cat (the stubborn one!) likes to sit on the keyboard while I’m typing. Grrr!  Suppose I should be thankful he doesn’t chew cords. –CP

Response:

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  I think I’m going to start out cheap (aluminum foil, tabasco) and then, if that doesn’t work, we’ll see about wrapping up the cables in one of those plastic tubes (thanks KCat).  I really don’t want to get rid of the cat, but he’s driving me crazy. Thank you again, Mel

Step 1: Walk all over newspaper/paperwork until she pays attention. If she tries to push you away, lie down on it and don’t budge. Growl if she tries to pick you up and move you. If she insists, start tearing the paper to shreds with your teeth. Step 2 Human has moved to funny square looking thing that she stares at on desk. Walk back and forth in front of it so she can’t see what she’s doing. If she tries to move you, growl. If she slides you further away, and pretends to pay attention by petting you with left hand (while clicking with right hand), lazily hang your paws over the edge of the desk onto that thing she calls a keyboard and start pressing on what she calls keys…(like the spacebar).. . (my cat has an uncanny knowledge of Microsoft hot keys, like Exit/Close/Send/Delete) If she pushes you away, get down on the keyboard and walk back and forth…create your own language. Step 3 Sit in front of her and lick her face or look very sad. 333333333jjjeeeeeeghgegh8l To be continued…. Gotta run, now I feel guilty <grin> going to play with kitties. ;) J — Slightly addled but darned proud of it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Perry wrote: > My cat (the stubborn one!) likes to sit on the keyboard while I’m typing. > Grrr!  Suppose I should be thankful he doesn’t chew cords. > –CP

Hello Melanie, buy some cat nip and put it somewhere you want to have your cat for a while. It works best on a scratch post or on that card board scratching thing (don’t know the name, it comes in a plastic box with a lid and you can replace the inside card board thing after a while). Cats just love cat nip and go crazy on the place you put it. Give him lots of cat toys to keep him occupied! Hope, that’ll help! And I hope, you don’t give him away! I think there is a type of spray you can buy that will keep cats away….if you can’t find that spray, you can try rubbing hot pepper juice on the cables, that should work to keep the cats away – like maybe take a napkin and soak it in the juice from a jar of pickled jalapenos or something like that, and wipe the cables down with a good mixture of that…?  It’s worth a try, anyway. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after using any of the pepper stuff – I have a bad reaction to that stuff on my skin – especially mouth or eyes. You may even want to use rubber gloves while doing this.  Probably just me… *********************************** KCat http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’

My only suggestion is not all that great – check with your local hardware store for cable/wire guards.  I’m not sure what they’re called but they’re essentially tubes that can be run along the top of your baseboards or elsewhere and they encase the wires.  Of course, the distance from wall to the object being connected then is left open.  I think I’ve seen them in Home Improvements catalog as well… yeah… here it is… Item #174303.  www.ImprovementsCatalog.com  comes in a kit and can be painted – it’s white ABS tubing.  Perhaps finding something similar that is flexible would cover the distance of cord that is not against a wall. Good luck – no fun having to give up kitty. There’s also bitter apple spray but I would worry about putting that on electrical cord. :- or rubbing a small amount of capsaicin cream or pepper sauce? Capsaicin might work best – brutal stuff though if he decides to ignore it – little mouth could swell and might make him sick so don’t try this one unless the vet says it might work safely. I don’t know about with cats but chewers (dogs) are typically bored. They need mental stimulation and stress releases like play time and walks and the like (obviously, most people don’t walk cats).  So distracting him with positive attention might be worthwhile too – fuss first, then a minute later reward him for not messing with the wires. This works well with dogs – cats are  a different sort of people though so I don’t know how effective it is. (no, it doesn’t work on this cat ! :) *********************************** KCat http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’

I know that some of you have cats and I was wondering if there is any way to stop a cat from chewing on the cables on my computer.  My cat has destroyed 5 pairs of speakers (and working on number 6) and 2 phone cords by chewing on the wires.  If I catch him, I’m going to have to give him away.  We gave his sister away (different reason), but she used to do the same thing. Any thoughts?  Anyone?  I’m desperate. Thank you. Mel

Greetings! First, try getting some tabasco sauce, or bitter apple spray (pet stores carry it) and put one or the other on the cables.  If your cat likes the stuff:  buy some plastic tubes that are split on one side, open the split, put the cables in then tape/close the split.. If your cables have to go around corners, then buy multiple pieces, or elbow pieces. Also, get the cat some chew toys. Just some ideas borrowed from other pet chat groups… Sandy   – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I know that some of you have cats and I was wondering if there is any way to >stop a cat from chewing on the cables on my computer.  My cat has destroyed >5 pairs of speakers (and working on number 6) and 2 phone cords by chewing >on the wires.  If I catch him, I’m going to have to give him away.  We gave >his sister away (different reason), but she used to do the same thing. >Any thoughts?  Anyone?  I’m desperate. >Thank you. >Mel

Wrap the cables in aluminum foil – it stops unwanted chewing cold. -=JR=- — "To live in the past is a tired thing" E Carl, Navaho 1924 – 1943
