Question:
Yep! You made me curious… I checked those beans. If there wasn’t 15 different ones in there, I was gonna fuss. LOL Here they are: Northern blackeyed peas Large Lima Garbanzo Red Kidney Baby Lima Lentil Green split peas Navy Cranberry bean Black Beans White Kidney Pink Beans Yellow Split Peas and pintos plus pearl Barley You cook these dried beans as usual. Then after they are tender add: minced garlic, a large onion, the juice of one lemon, and a 15oz can of (diced) tomatoes. Yummmmm good. Fix a large iron skillet of buttermilk cornbread too. — barbtoo east tennessee
Response:
Now I have to go get some and cook them. I just made my first black beans and rice from scratch, pretty good. Basically the same as your recipe except add cumin, bay leaves, oregano. Serve over brown rice and spoon salsa and sour cream on top. Sue in Tallahassee "Barbara Petty" <bwpe…@worldnet.att.net> wrote in message

okay you cooking fans… since when should I find bay leaves in my chicken burrito from a tex-mex restaurant. Hubby says "always" – I have *never* seen them. I’m assuming it was bay leaves. Large, ovate, gave my burrito an odd sort of taste that might have made sense in lasagna but… Also. Since when do we cook Pearl Bailey? ;-) On Mon, 07 Jan 2002 00:43:24 GMT, "Barbara Petty" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<bwpe…@worldnet.att.net> wrote: >Yep! Hey, that’s cheating – lentils ain’t beans
We have a thing called "country bean mixture – a selection of versatile beans"… the mind boggles… It contains red kidney beans, soya beans, pinto beans, cannellini beans, chick peas, Dutch brown beans. That’s 5. You boil hard for 10 mins, gently for another 50, throw away the water then use them eg in chili-con-carne or soup. — Andy [Editor, Austrian Philatelic Society] For Austrian philately <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps> For Lupus <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus> For my other interests <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk>

Lentils are in the pea family and all the beans and peas belong in the legume family along with several wonderful garden flowers that you don’t want to eat. Barley is not a legume and I think is a monocot but I’d have to look that up to be sure – my field crop knowledge is limited. But generally speaking barley is considered to be in the grass family – much like wheat. I’ve made the 15 bean soup on several occasions but my hubby prefers either split peas or lentils. And maybe since we aren’t supposed to be ingesting a ton of legumes that may be why my tummy goes bonkers when it is full of a nice bowl of "legume" soup. You shouldn’t find bay leaves in your food. Bay leaves are supposed to be removed before eating cuz they can scratch your throat. The leaves have pokey things all around it. All the cooking shows say to remove the bay leaves. They are from laurel trees. Nicole
