Mouth Sores

Question:

Kelley has an infected oral ulcer on the bottom of her tongue.  How long does it take for them to heal?  Any recommended remedies?  Her doc put her on Amoxacillin (sp?) for 10 days. I have nothing but rave reviews for Walter Reed Army Med Ctr…they saved Kelley’s life on 20Dec03 (so much has happened that I don’t know if I shared this w/ you).  Kelley’s kidneys and bowels shut down after a week of severe dehydration, vomitting and flu (the move from Fayetteville, NC to DC wore her out).  The doctor said that she also had a mild stroke (impaired speech and erratic memory coupled with some paralysis – she has recovered for the most part now).  They pumped her full of fluids and now say that we should expect her recovery to take another 4-6 weeks. My daughter, Kelsey (who is now 3) is staying w/ my sister in SC until Apr04 and my stepson, Troy (21) has moved in from Knoxville to help us. regards, Daniel

Hi Daniel, I am glad to see you here with an update. I think of you, Kelley and Kelsey often. Your situation is a tough one. I am glad Kelley is receiving such good care. There are different gels and mouth washes available at your pharmacy. The pharmacist could likely recommend a soothing one for the mouth sores. Be sure that it isn’t anything that contains cortisone. That would not be a good choice for a bacterial infection. I don’t know how long it might take for this to heal. Hopefully the ten days of antibiotics will knock it out. In the meantime, some topical remedies might ease the pain. I know we can get some here in Canada that contain a numbing agent. Please keep in touch. BJ-Sk. I know it’s not ’supposed’ to do any good, but when I get the nasal ulcers, Campho Phynique (sp?) (or oil of camphor) seems to help. I’ve also read that the nasal & oral ulcers aren’t painful, bah, I say! They hurt like He*!@!! Hi Daniel! I’m glad Kelly is finally on the road to recovering.  The move must have been so tough & you guys must miss Kelsey like crazy. We had a thread here about mouth sores around the 3rd.  See below. Please don’t follow any of the advice in the thread without checking with a doctor/pharmacist, k? Since hers is infected, you need to be sure it’s okay to use whatever you decide to use. http://tinyurl.com/28zww Good luck & keep us posted when you get the chance.  I hope things improve for you all with your step-son coming to help. Hugs, Maggie

I have been on Methotrexate for a bout a year now, (two 2.5mg once a week) and my doctor also has me on Folic Acid, (One a day, 1mc) and he told me to increase the Folic Acid per day to help. It did.    I will depend on what your doctor has you on so it would be best to talk to him. L. Walker

Hi Elle Ihave all sorts of mouth sores and they usually only go away for a short time. Sometimes at night I count them  which is like watching sheep jump over a style.  Kcat suggested listerine and when they get too much I take clindanycin which clears it up for awhile.  Sorry to say depression seems to come with the lupus in some cases.  I have it and try to realize it and not be a pain in the neck to everyone around me.  Since I work out of our house and have at least two people in the office I take Prozac so that I don’t pull everyone down with.  My husband has a really weird sense of humor and even though he is working upstairs  he bursts into the office often  with some horrible pun which helps.  It is hard to be upbeat all the time when you musn’t go out in the sun and you feel crappy half of the time.  So we all whine at times  it helps   welcome  Ruth
