Lawn edger: Electric, Gas or waste of money?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Institution :I have a house on a corner lot, so I have a LOT of sidewalk, over 200′. :The grass has grown a couple of inches over the sidewalk.  My brother has a :electric edger and he says it was a waste of money ( I don’t know which :brand).  I figure the gas ones have more power, hence, they would do a :better job.  I have looked at the MTD gas edger for about $220, about twice :the price of an electric one.  Is it worth the extra bucks?  Which brands :are recommended?  Are any of the edgers worth the price? : Not sure if you’re interested but I use a mechanical one. No gas. No : electricity. Just human power. At our old house I’d use it once or twice a : season which was more than enough to keep the grass in line. Good on the muscles : and heart too:) : I think the unit cost maybe $30 at a local hardware store. : Tx, : Neil Law : Waterloo, On, Canada I also have a push type edger. I have about 250′ of edging including my driveway. I edge several times a year early in the morning before it gets too hot. The first time you edge is a lot of work, but it is very little work for subsequent times. It also helps if you edge after a good rain. —

That’s what I’m trying to avoid, that "a lot of work thing".  Actually I’m not as opposed to the work as I am to the time involved.  That’s why I’m interested in a power edger, hopefully that would be easier and less time consuming. Doc

I use a heavy duty ice scraper that I keep sharp. Use it for ice on the sidewalks in the winter. Response:

Gas would be fine, too, except they’re usually quite a bit noisier. And they contribute to ozone pollution.

Yep and the electricity is beamed in from outer space and generating it pollutes nothing. Whats wrong with using a spade? Tom There is an extra Bee in the Email address after the AOL.com

My electricity is generated by windpower, an option we have here. I would love to be able to use a spade. Unfortunately I have Lupus and some very physical things are beyond me.

apologies, doc, i failed to reread your last line

That’s okay, it should bounce back to you anyway.  I found the best way to avoid spam, is to not use a valid E-mail.  Everytime I post something, I am deluged with junk.  I put in that line just in case anyone tries to respond via e-mail only. Rent an edger to clean up what you have now, then maintain it with a string trimmer. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping.  Smart is Beautiful

How many years ago? What’s the model name? I purchased it just this summer. Model No. 358-796500

Response:

How well did it perform the first time?

It did a great job the first time. It was a little slower than now, but didn’t bog down or have any problems.

Response:

I figure the gas ones have more power, hence, they would do a better job. I too have a large corner lot with lots of edge to trim. I use a Sear’s Craftsman electric edger ( 3 horsepower) and it does a great job. It was under a hundred dollars.

The gas edger I saw was 3.5 HP, I believe the electric was 2.5.  My main question is:  How well did it perform the first time?  I realize after the first time it gets easier. Doc

Response:

i started out with a gas string trimmer that i tried using as an edger  angled differently) but i got fed up with the weight, noise and gasoline exhaust so i bought a black and decker string trimmer which has a button to twist the end and turn into an edger.  i agree about the first edging round : definitely difficult  but the subsequent runs have been a breeze.  there is a trench between the sidewalk and my grass now but i like the way it looks.  well worth the $50.  the gas was more powerful (i whacked down thigh-high weeds for a friend of mine for 3 or 4 hours one day) but for a typical job i much prefer the electric

The gas edger I saw didn’t look like it would be hard manage.  It had four wheels on it so it looked pretty stable.  If it does a decent job of cutting, I wouldn’t  think it would be hard to handle. Doc

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My dad has an electric one that I’ve used on his sidewalk and driveway.  It worked just fine, even when the grass had been let go a while.  I did hit the concrete occassionally without any real problem. Also, any semi-unsightly trenches I made due to inexperience seemed to fill in quickly (they weren’t that big after all). I also borrowed it to try and edge along the paving blocks and grass(i.e. no smooth concrete to ride the thing along) I have and it did areasonable job there, even when I had to drive it along the grass. Took a little more care and patience in this application, but wasn’t bad.   Not something I’d do every time, but I was just trying to get the grass in line so I could attack it with a manual spikey wheel thingamabob afterwards. Anyway, whatever brand he has (got it at Sam;s Club or the like) seems to be able to take a little abuse from running into concrete once in a while, without ruining it (may need to resharpen more frequently, of course), and did the job for us edging. I havn’t checked Sam’s, good idea.  I know they carry MTD mowers. they may have the edger.  Last year I bought a  MTD snow blower and I would highly recommend it.  I would appreciate any comments regarding preferred brands and durability. But I do not use it for edging along a sidewalk. I use it to edge between a lawn, and an adjoining flower bed or mulched area. I really never used it where it could come into contact with concrete or stone. Along the sidewalk and driveway that is next to the lawn, I’ve just used my string trimmer, and walking ON the sidewalk/driveway, I’ve used it to cut the overlapping grass down to the level of the sidewalk/driveway.With a little practice, you should be able to have lush grass right up to the concrete, not overlapping, and no trench between the lawn and the concrete surface. tom kan pa
