Question:
Thank you all for your kind concern. My fingers are working now, which makes me very happy. The pain level is down below threshold level, which is fine and dandy with me. My big brother (he also has lup) just invited me down south for Christmas, and paid for the flight! Coolness! Good things do happen, Mary — October is National Lupus Awareness Month. Someone you know has lupus.

"South" is Southern California. I live in Northern California, but I was born and raised down south to where I will be going. I will be seeing a lot of family members whom I haven’t seen in years. I don’t think it is going to snow! In fact it kind of amazes me when I get on the plane up here with a coat and scarf and gloves….fly 45 minutes… and walk out into warm sunshine. The sunshine was part of what I wanted to get away from, but it is nice every now and then… especially welcome in December! Yeah, my brother is cool. Wow…sounds like a nice brother. Christmas isn’t too far around the corner either, I can’t believe summer’s over, where did it go? Maureen

</snip> Mary I am happy for you to have a ‘happy thing’ to look forward to before the end of the year too! Coolness is right! My aunt is in Costa Mesa, is that anywhere around where you were brought up? My son’s ‘natural aunt’ live in LA and his ‘natural mom’ took him there the year they met (when he turned 19) but he is the only one in our family to have made it below Oregon coastline around the ‘dunes’ area!! And we loved it; it seemed that the further we went along the better it got! I can’t imagine as far down as the Orange county area… the beaches must be just beautiful… be sure to let us know all the details once you are back! I, for one, love to hear about other peoples’ trips and maybe even see the possible pics they might take? The digital camera you are going to buy me, right? I was not raised in Orange County. I was raised at the upper eastern side of the Los Angeles Basin, in the San Gabriel Valley, near Pasadena, and right up against the San Gabriel Mountains. And that is where I will be going when I go south. My brother has a home in San Bernardino, and one in Big Bear. I have spent lots of time in Costa Mesa, my favorite beach is Corona del Mar, which is the beachland just off Costa Mesa. I don’t like much of the other beaches, Huntington, Newport, Laguna, Seal Beach. I was raised going to just ‘flat sand’ beaches, loaded with folks wall-to-wall on their little blankets. The "infestation of humanity" as I have always called it, really is repulsive to me. I love the beaches where I live: steep rocky cliffs, with small trails that lead down to private beaches covered in tiny polished rocks. As you said "the further south you got the more you liked it,"–well the further north I have gotten the more I like it! Mary "Shelagh" <valleylu…@telus.net> wrote in message

</snip> Hi Mary, I think that probably the wild and beautiful beaches we are discussing are in a similar area or location (northern Ca and southern Oregon). I too prefer these to the flat, sandy, people populated areas. We are moving to Van. Island and the beaches in the area we are going to are the same… wild and rocky with private trails down to them … whereas there are the flat, sandy ones up the highway not too far as well, and they are great when the tide is out for long, long walks along the deserted waters’ edge. So it is the best of all worlds we feel and are so excited about it. Hope you enjoy your holiday anyway without the camera<g>! from Shelagh Co-ordinator Of Valley-Lupus – Invisible in Plain Sight at http://www3.telus.net/valleylupus/index.html Subgroup of BC Lupus Society at www.bclupus.org/ and Lupus Canada at www.lupuscanada.org/

Unfortunately, the SoCal beaches are mostly built up with what are called "McMansions" – overpriced cookie cutter houses with no character – and any charm they had has been erased by the pretentious twits who live there and refuse beach rights to everyone else (See current Doonesbury story). I far prefer the beaches in Nova Scotia and the Cape to the trashed sand in SoCal. <Waves to BJ>

The waves come across the open Pacific in huge rollers that crash on an expansive rocky and rugged beach you can walk for miles on! The spray is windy and cold and so refreshing. We love it winter and summer and go as often as we can (specially since we got the RV). It has been made into a National Park so the beauty is being preserved forever which is terrific. Once on the island I would imagine we will get there monthly if not weekly! Only one thing I have to say about South California beaches. My ex-father-in-law (a wealthy surgeon), owned a house right on the sand at San Juan Capistrano. In this context, with the private beach, the beach can be lovely, and brings a great sense of peace and wonderment to my heart (only outdone by the Northern California Redwood forests). The front of the house was one solid window facing the beach, and the front room was decorated to match the color of the sea… M. "Shelagh" <valleylu…@telus.net> wrote in message

I once rode a motorcycle up island to Port Hardy to catch the ferry for the inland passage. *Please* send photos – they will rekindle very fond memories! Judity, envious in SoCal

</snip> Do you mean the ferry that goes up to Prince Rupert? An overnighter? Or are you talking about the one that goes to the Sunshine Coast? There is also the one that goes from Victoria to Washington through the gulf islands. We have done them all and loved them. Such beauty along the coastline and in among the passages and the through the Sound. > *Please* send photos – they will rekindle very fond memories!
