cortisone

Question:

I have been in a flare for the last week or so…. just feeling rotten, pain levels are very high, etc….. I’m going in for a cortisone shot tomorrow. What type of cortisone is used?  Just curious as I’ve never had one.  I try to avoid them but I’m desperate. Thanks Nicole

So sorry to hear this Nicole.  I’m not sure which type they use in the injections, but still wanted to send my healing vibes your way. They usually use an iv pack of solumedrol or something similar and let it slowly drip into you over a half hour or so maybe in combo with a pain killing injection (demerol or morphine?)  to help you through the ‘crisis’…. that is what I would usually get up here in BC Ca. anyway; Do you have oral prednisone at home? Another possibility is that they would give a dosage of 60-80 mg. (up from your regular daily dose if you had been on it) and if not they would start you up in that range for a flare and  keep it there for a few days slowly weaning you down by halves every few days till about the 10 mg. level for a week or so… then 5 mg. for another week again; and if you are well you go off it after taking alternate days of 5mg for another week *if you weren’t on it prior to the flare (and/or stay at your reg. daily dose *if you were on it prior to the flare: ie- 5mg. every day or alternate days depending where you were at you would just carry on as usual. Hi Nicole, Gosh, I am sorry to here that you are so ill. They give me IV solumedrol when I am really ill. I had to go to the hospital every day for five days to have this done. I was also on 60mgs oral pred at the time. Let us know how things go for you. BJ-Sk. Canada "Nicole H" <nhighto…@bak.rr.comREMOVE> wrote in message

If you are going for a "shot" I take it you mean in the buns type shot? The injection into the muscle?  LOL There are different types.  Depo medrol which comes in different strengths. then there is solu cortef and celestone and otheres  All different types. I depends on what they doctor uses most or what meds you are on also. The injection site might be a little sore later for you. Also a flushed face is not uncommon for the first couple days.  So hang in there janers

I have had only one real bad flare, almost wish I was dead at the time. My wife called my doctor, I went in and was giving a steroid shot and in three days I felt great. Then next bad flare my doctor told me to take one Pred a day for no more than four days. Did the trick. When I first had Lupus he put me on Pred. didn’t go down with me but worked good here. Now when I think a flare is coming on I just get a lot of rest. Good Luck, >>>—LDW—->
