Ha! Don’t mention them. I once went to New Orleans, stayed in an upmarket hotel, and found they had run out of mint. — Andy [Editor, Austrian Philatelic Society] For Austrian philately <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps> For Lupus <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus> For my other interests <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk>

Response:

Heavenly days, we can’t run out of mint. Then you’d have plain juleps and not mint juleps. Must have mint juleps!! We are a very civilized group here. Maybe the men might want something a wee bit stronger. (Said in my finest Southern accent.) Bev "Andy" <a…@kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk> wrote in message

I can cough up the silver cups but who’ll make the mint juleps? Lots of big shade trees surround my property so we don’t have to sit in the sun. And I’ve got two BIG beach-like umbrellas we can use, too. Oh, wouldn’t that be fun having everybody here! Bev "wards" <jcwar…@earthlink.net> wrote in message

It’s amazing how dressing in the garb of a different era changes you. The men are gallant, don’t sweat, and treat the ladies like ladies. The ladies find themselves acting like ladies and saw a mild "drat" if they miss a target. It’s a lot of work, but incredible fun. However, when the day is over stepping into a hot shower, donning modern clothing and going out to eat, is a relief. Judith, caught between two worlds "wards" <jcwar…@earthlink.net> wrote in message

Out here, it’s mostly cars and trucks abandoned in the desert.  Occasionally with mummified bodies inside, usually without. "Sherry" <sstof…@inreach.com> wrote in message

I went shopping for material for a walking skirt (circa 1880) and found some golden brown poplin  that is a great coordinate with my leather and the new rosewood grips on my 32s.  Perfect for the outfit I had planned, so I bought 10 yards (enough to make a jacket later on) – the really great thing is it was on sale at $1 a yard! Then, at another store, I saw some dark brown faux suede – I’ll have to cut the back of the skirt a bit less full, as there were only four yards of material (64"), but I’ll make it work. With a natural (very light beige) cotton blouse trimmed with Cluny lace that I just bought, I’ll have a really handsome set for evening. I will wear the poplin skirt with a yellow silk shirt or a natural linen one for competition shooting. Last week I fond a pair of wonderful black suede shoes – worn once or twice at most – for $2 (yep, *two* dollars) at a sale at the thrift Shoppe. So, for under $60, I’ll have an evening outfit, another skirt to go with two shirts I already have, and the shoes. Now, to get the dining room table cleared off and the sewing machine set up! perhaps if you check out the websites that provide such information you could put signs on them saying "This item has not been recalled due to defects" or something like that. a lot of "used" strollers, carriers, etc. are things that were recalled but the owner never knew and never had the recall problem occur.  There’s been some typically "scary" news stories on t.v. lately about such things and people are careful.   Recently heard story – woman gets hand-me-down playpen for baby boy. Previous owner (her sibling) had no problem with it.  Locking mechanism too easy and baby boy twists, collapses the playpen on himself and of course, was killled.  While this is a true story and a huge concern, it’s these events that have people going more for new stuff (in part). And if they’re like me, they got hand-me-downs all their lives from the older/prettier sister and are sick and tired of them and want something "new" for themselves. OTOH, I had very little money when I had my kiddo – and did take some things that were used.  A good "walker" that was used and very sturdy for example.

Response:

I’m not sure what is the matter with people and the ‘need’ to have new stuff either.  We all used hand me downs for our children….seems they were born just far enough apart that my sister, several good friends and I kept the US mail hot sending it back and forth.  Made it all more special. Remember when you could call Salvation Army or the Goodwill and they would pick up your old furniture.  They would repair and recover it and then I guess sell it.  Not anymore if it is not in the condition to sell they do not want it!  They used to train people giving them the skills of upholstery work etc for a ‘helping hand’ for a step up. There's a law here (UK) that prevents much old stuff being reused - if sold (I'm unsure what applies if given free) it has to meet today's standards of fireproofing. I’ve got baby stuff I can’t even give away. It is in nice – to perfect condition. Thought I’d give it to the shelters – they don’t want it they are only accepting new stuff. This stuff is taking up way too much space in my house. Hate to put it in the trash. Bev "J Rogow" <JRo…@SPAMNOT.com> wrote in message

We certainly hope so.  The thing has been repainted several times (it is wicker) but has the original wooden wheels. Nana kept it in her walk-in closet as a place to store odds and ends, then sent it back to my father to keep for me.  I kept it for my son, along with the "Make Way For Ducklings" book – first edition – that Dad read to me, and I read to my son.  His sons really enjoy it, too. My family is big on heirlooms.

I will never understand people who "need" everything new for a baby. It’s not as if *they* notice. I am glad they our DiL (an Atty) went the thrift shop route for our grandsons.  It made economic and ecological sense, and she got some amazingly nice things. The bassinette, though, is the one I put my son in, that my Nana put me in.

Judith, boy did you hit it big in your bargin shopping.  Glad that you were able to find the real thing and your set is once again complete.

I really flipped when I saw it – after trying to buy *just* the tea caddy from the manufacturer, it was wonderful to find it there. I’m stoked about the lace, too.  Gotta use tea to make it old looking for my shooting outfits.

These have a faint scent, more pronounced in warmer weather. I love prowling junk shops, there are three in the closest town, and I’ve gotten some amazing buys. Places like Cheyenne, Las Vegas, Denver, and Los Angeles have great shops, because their have a larger population base.

After 90+ minutes in the dentist’s chair, I thought I’d earned a trip to the thrift store. Found the smallest piece (tea caddy) to my Italian Glass set of canisters, so can replace the crummy 99-cent store one with the real thing – after six years.  That was $1.00. Then, in the crafts area, got five yards of flat cotton lace, two inches wide, for a quarter.  Yep, five-cents a yard! Got home to find another rose had bloomed. Now I don’t feel so bad for not going shooting!
