Can’t speak for everyone but carbos are about all I can eat but then I have pretty serious gut problems that don’t allow me to have excessive fibre or protein. Carbs and fats are us! Well, me anyway. :) there was a thread or two a few weeks ago on high protein diets and various input on this topic carbs vs. proteins etc. I hope you’ll get other answers here but you may find some interesting info in Deja News archives… do a search for this group on "High Protein" and you should find something. Diabetes is not uncommon (overlapping with SLE) so obviously there are some of us that must be careful about our carbo intake. I do have "sugar crashes" (supposedly "hyperinsulinism" if you believe there is such a thing) so I have to eat little snacks often. I carry glucose tablets or sugar candies with me (as opposed to chocolate or the like). take care, KCat

Hey! I have episodes of hypoglycemia, too! My rheumy was drawing lupus and metabolic panels every 3 months before I got pregnant (now I have them every month) and my serum glucose was never what you’d call normal. Normal is usually said to be 70 to 100 or 120, and mine were running low 70s or high 60s. Since I’ve gotten pregnant, they’ve been even lower. A couple weeks ago, I ate breakfast (carbohydrates), went for my monthly ultrasound, then drank a Sprite (big ol’ chunk of sugar). 40 minutes after the Sprite, I had my labs drawn, and my serum glucose was (gasp) 35! I didn’t feel bad, but the doc’s office called immediately to see if I was still alive! My diabetic friend was aghast, and I have since learned that in normal people (again.. are we normal??) 40 seems to be the low threshhold and they pass out. We (myself, family & friends) have also decided it is hyperinsulinism, or, reactive hypoglycemia. Apparently, we do fine fasting (my fasting serum glucose tests were 77 and 66), but once a short acting sugar (like the Sprite, or those sundaes that were way cheap last month at Sonic) is introduced, the pancreas reacts by dumping too much insulin and the glucose crashes. Since the 35, I have been more diligent to consume protein and carbohydrates (since they take longer to be converted over to glucose) and haven’t had another headache. My rheumy seems relatively concerned– he said if this continues post partum we’ll investigate it further, but the ob/gyn is strangely, even frighteningly, unconcerned. I guess they’ve got enough to worry over waiting to see if I’ll develop HELLP syndrome again. Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about Plaquenil and breastfeeding. We are still investigating this matter to see if it is safe, and I appreciate your feedback. Hugs, Laura in RR
