Response:

Update again We got a bit of rain on Thursday afternoon – only rained for an hour or so and not heavy, but enough to improve things for us around here.  The fires in the Shoalhaven area have improved dramatically and we personally are out of risk.  They are still burning, but within containment lines.  The one west of us here has been burning in the national park for a month and has burned about 60,000 hectares of bush so far.  Across the state, however, there is 80 separate fires still burning and threatening people and houses. Yesterday and today (Sat) are cool and still , but the hot dry winds will be back on Monday.  They have 48 hours to try and contain the fire fronts, before all hell breaks loose again.  When it was scary on Wednesday it was 37 deg C with 80 knot winds, today its only 22deg.(much nicer)   The problem with bushfires in Australia is the speed and ferocity, because eucalyptus oil is so flammable gum trees don’t just burn, they literally explode.  The fire moves faster than people can get away from it, jumping from treetop to treetop, jumping rivers, highways etc.  The spot fires from burning embers are usually 1-2 km ahead of the main firefront due to the winds. I can hear the helicopters overhead this morning, they are still waterbombing the national park fire. Hopefully the risk is over for us. Mind you, it is only Dec7—bushfire problems are usually around Christmas early January!! Lyndal "BJ" <B…@sk.nojunk.ca> wrote in message

Well 2.30pm and all is OK at the present.  Still in for another windy afternoon- it was this time yesterday that everything went haywire.  Still at the moment the wind is blowing away from us, not towards us.  Fingers crossed for everyone else, there are fires all over the place.  Looks like we’ll be fine though Lyndal "BJ" <B…@sk.nojunk.ca> wrote in message

Response:

Well, what a rough night.   We have had bushfires all over NSW yesterday and circling us last night.  Its 5.52 am and I have had a fitful night’s sleep. We were  on standby to evacuate from about 5pm.  The wind dies down about 1am so we went to bed.  Right now everything is smoky but the air is still. The weather is predicting 7o knot winds again today, so it will be open slather again soon.  The scary thing about last night’s fires is how fast they were moving and closing in on town.  Last summer was bad (Christmas Day was shocking) but mainly affected coastal villages in bushland – a town called Huskisson 20kms down the coast from here was burned on Christmas morning – 20 homes destroyed in the space of 2 hours.  Last night, the fire burned down 5 homes at Albatross (about 10km by road, half that as the crow flies from here) then jumped the 4 lane highway and was threatening homes etc It jumped the Shoalhaven river so it was moving very  fast.  Scary stuff There were fires all over Sydney also with another 5 or 6 houses burned in Sydney.  When it startslike this, they are usually everywhere.  For those of you outside Australia we are also in the midst of one of the worst droughts on records.  Entire towns out west have run out of water completely.  The bush is SOOOO dry that when the ash and embers get blown ahead of the fire, they ignite anything they touch, that’s why the front moves so fast. Prayers for everyone in NSW today – the worst may well be yet to come Lyndal
