Attn: Andy re: Diabetes r/t lupus

Question:

Andy~~~I was able to spend some time on the site today, and was taken aback by the timing of your post regarding the effects of lupus and corticosteroids on the islet cells of the pancreas.  Last week I was told that there is a strong possibility that I may be developing diabetes secondary to the high doses of pulse steroids, and the daily high doses of 40-80mg. of prednisone.  I am still absorbing this information, and see my rheumy on the 18th of the month.  Further testing awaits.  I will try my best to keep you aware of findings or reasonings of the developments.  My diet is a strict cardio-vascular diet at this time, and I have no history of diabetes in my family tree.  Our hope is that this is a transient finding in lieu of my pylonephritis and recent severe flare, and that it will turn out for the best.  I feel like I’m due some "good" results.  page 125 hits it on the head.  I will let you know if they pursue any particular screenings to monitor the health of my pancreas itself, and it’s overall functioning.  Best wishes to all on the group, Sincerely Kimw777

Sorry to hear about the diabetes.  I guess it’s not like you needed another problem.  Luckily there are some new medications now for diabetes which can help control blood sugar much better than ever.  I can’t remember the names, unfortunately, but I’ll look them up if you need me to.  It’s probably not going to be necessary though.  We have many diabetics in our family including my husband.  I understand from them that there is a big push to get people with type II diabetes on the new medications.   Sandra
