?? about first visit with RE Please read!

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –     I am trying to decide when to go see an RE.  It will be my first visit. I don’t know if I should go in Dec. or wait until Jan. I would like to go ahead and go in Dec., but  DH and I would like to go on vacation for a few days in Dec.  Is there a certain time in my cycle when I would need to schedule my apt? What would the RE do on the first visit?     Here is my background……. I have been trying to get pg. for 1 year & have had 2 m/cs.  I have already had an HSG and some blood tests, and DH has had an SA.  Everything was normal.  Today I had my progesterone level tested. I will get the results back on Mon.  I also ovulate regularly.  Can anyone tell me what an RE would usually do in a case like mine?  I would like to know what to expect from the first visit with the RE.  Do they usually complete more tests, just ask questions, or do something else?

Andrea, I would go ahead an make an appointment with an RE.  Like you, I had several miscarriages (but also an ectopic pg) before going to an RE.  I had been trying 2 years and had been tested for progesterone.  I had done an HSG, but prior to the ectopic.  Dh had already done a SA. At our first RE visit, we talked about my medical history and what tests he would do etc.  He also gave me a regular checkup with pelvic etc.  It did not matter what time in my cycle I went for the consultation, but ask your RE, maybe you can schedule some of the blood work for the first visit and save time. Since I had multiple miscarriages, this is what my doctor tested for: 1.  "Clomid Challenge Test" to check for high FSH level an indicator of poor egg quality.  I am 35, you may not need this. 2.  Endometrial biopsy–to check for luteal phase defect, also "Beta 3 integrant" which is a kind of "velcro" needed for implantation to be successful. 3. HSG–since I had an ectopic 4.  Antinuclear antibodies, anticardiolipids and a series of immune problems that can also prevent successful implantation.  A simple blood test. 5.  Genetic testing (you may or may not need this.  It is kind of expensive) 6.  Prolactin level and other hormone levels. 7.  Diabetes, thyroid, lupus other problems that can affect pregnancy. Basic blood tests. I think you should be able to have your first consultation and also take your trip in December.  You’ll just have to wait to do your testing until January. But I would go ahead and get started.  You’ll feel so much better after talking with an RE. There is a good article on "Recurrent Pregnancy Loss" at the "Fertile Thought" website.  I don’t have the exact address right now, but if you can’t find it, write me and I’ll look it up for you. Good luck! Katherine

Hi,  I would go ahead and start with all the test and blood work.  Then enjoy the holidays because it is stressful starting out.  After the first of the year, begin the procedures.  Good Luck  Sharon

Our first visit to the RE was a consultation, where he asked some basics about our health history and laid out his "plan of attack." I hadn’t had any prior testing, though. Call the RE’s office and ask what they’ll do. My guess is that he or she will want to figure out what’s causing the miscarriages first.
