Only likely connection would be that they were both born susceptible to lupus and both picked up some virus there which triggered it. If they were not related, chance for each being born thus would be same as for any two humans. Sounds like coincidence to me. — Andy For Austrian philately <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps/> For Lupus <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/> For my other interests <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/>

Can anyone tell me why two best friends, both aged 17, visited the Ruislip Lido in 1986 and contracted Lupus. My sister only lived until she was 18, her friend aged 35. What’s the connection or is this merely coincidence?

<<Can anyone tell me why two best friends, both aged 17, visited the Ruislip Lido in 1986 and contracted Lupus.>> Personally, I don’t see a connection, though I suppose it’s possible that the trip itself was the trigger for setting off a cascade of symptoms. Also, lupus treatment has come a long way since your sister and friend first found out they had lupus. There are always still those few in whom lupus is so severe that their lifespan is very shortened, but this doesn’t any longer represent the majority. Sandra

the current "theories" don’t really provide a connection in a case like this. Given that lupus is not as rare as people once believed, it’s certainly possible that both had the genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease and that both were exposed to a stressor or virus at the same time that might have triggered it. That said.. we don’t know for certain how lupus is triggered, what it’s causes are, etc. It’s pretty much guesswork right now. for more info on SLE check out the Alt.support.faq at http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm this faq has numerous URLs in Section 5 and a well written (no I didn’t write it) explanation of the current theories of etiology. I’m very sorry for you losses. Best wishes, Kcat
