Question:

Hi Teresa, I would like to ask you how your lupus was first diagnosed. Would you mind sharing that information with me? BJ-freezing in -25degree SK. "Teresa" <tnowo…@snet.net> wrote in message

Hi BJ, I’ve had a quite a few what you would call "serious illnesses" since I was a child.  My brother is what you would call a carrier, he gives but doesn’t get. The reason  mention this is because I think my immune system was weakened over the years from things he was kind enough to pass along.  He’s given me Scarlet fever when I was 5 and spinal meningitis when I was 17. Anyway, when I was 19 I started feeling sick, low grade fever, rash, aches & pains. I had pretty classic symptoms.  I initially went to the Dr. and they couldn’t find anything, when it got worse my mom took me to the emergency room and was told my the Dr.  in the ER there that I couldn’t be that sick since I was so young. I then ended up with a Rheumy who diagnosed Lupus.  By that time I wasn’t able to work from the pain in my joints and my eyes were doing weird things.  This 1st Dr. treated me with from the best I can remember Ecotrin aspirin and Imuran.  I didn’t get better, I actually got worse.  It was to the point where my younger sister was having to take me to the bathroom because I didn’t have the strength to do it myself.  I actually at that time wished I would die, I had gotten down to 85 lbs, couldn’t eat, was in pain and couldn’t take care of myself.  This Rheumy is the reason that when I had to change Dr’s years later, I was none to happy about going to another Rheumy but the Dr I have now is wonderful. My mom, who will strike up a conversation with anybody, met a women who worked at the Dana Clinic at Yale Hospital for a nephrologist.  This woman took my info down and passed it along to the Dr. she worked for, and they got me an appt. within days.  The Dr. took me off the meds the other Dr. had me on and started me on prednisone.  Within days it was almost like a miracle.  Since that time I’ve had no real  major problems, just your run of the mill flares until the ITP happened.  I’ve also been told I probably have Sjogrens and I’ve also tested positive for Anti Cardio Lipid Antibodies.  With all this, I guess I should count my blessings that I had as many years as I did with minimal problems. I hope this wasn’t to long winded and answered your question. :) Take care Teresa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -BJ wrote: > Hi Teresa, > I would like to ask you how your lupus was first diagnosed. Hi BJ, I’m glad you decided to slow down before you got really sick.  I know how it is though, you don’t want to admit you have limitations so you go about like nothing is wrong until it can’t be ignored.  That’s pretty much how I’ve handled my Lupus for the last 22 years and it seemed to work but now I’ve got to step back and take it more seriously. At least you are able to recognize when you need to slow down and take care of yourself.  I want to also say thank you for being there and answering my questions when I was scared, it helped me alot. Please let me know how the bloodwork turns out. Take care. Teresa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -BJ wrote: > Hi Teresa, > Good news again. That is great! A count of 227 is excellent. Good Evening Teresa, Weren’t you supposed to get the results of your blood test yesterday? What were your counts? BJ-hoping it was good news

Response:

Hi BJ, I did get the results yesterday, my platelet count is 227K, down a bit from the previous time which was 248K, but they told me that the numbers fluctuates constantly and that as long as I stay in the normal range there is nothing to worry about. My meds go down again on Monday, to 10 mgs of Prednisone and the plaquenil stays the same.  I see the oncologist on March 8th and will have more bloodwork then. I hope you’re feeling well.  Let me know how you’re doing. Hi Teresa, Good news again. That is great! A count of 227 is excellent. I hope you are not concerned about the drop. Mine never even gets to150 with treatment. I have a feeling that the plaquinil alone will keep you in the safe range. I am hanging in there. I have been overdoing it, and had to slow down. I tend to do that. I get down on myself when I don’t accomplish anything. I am due for blood work and B-12 next week again. I think it will be fine. Thank you for answering. You know I think about you. It can be a scarey thing with which to live, especially when you have dropped dangerously low. It takes some time to get used to it. BJ-SK. Canada "Teresa" <tnowo…@snet.net> wrote in message
