Question:
Teresa, I bruise so easily! Guess it is just one of those odd side-effects that goes with the Prednisone. I take a low dose of Prednisone….7mg alternating with 5 mg every other day. It took a long time for me to get below the 10mg. barbtoo east tennessee

Hi, My Name is Melody and when I was a teenager I had/have ITP. I had the severe brusing and the <peteceye> how ever you spell it. Anyways the doc put me on very very high doeses of predisone, 35 5mg 3xs a day to get my platlits to rise. My platelits would rise then as the doc would taper me off the predisone they would drop again. To make a long story short dispite the many many attemps of predisone they had to remove my spleen at the age of 15. I had the severe bruising as well and alot of my bruises did not hurt and I had no idea how I would get them, however being on the predisone I noticed alot of the bruising went away, I figure it was because my counts was rising. I am sorry I am not much help there is a site online it is called the itpplace its a wonderful website very helpful, Take care. Melody

Barbara, The rheumy pretty much confirmed what you said, it most likely the prednisone and not to worry since my platelet count has been good. Hi Melody, Luckily my numbers are rising and staying pretty consistent. I’m doing as much research as I can about why not to remove my spleen. Thank goodness it probably won’t come to that. My rheumy feels that since mine is immune due to my Lupus, we can control it with meds, which so far has worked. He also feels that the bruises I have now are from the meds and not to worry. I get my blood done Monday, so that should calm my nerves. Thanks for the site, I will check it out. Hi KCat, Per my Rheumy these bruises are more than likely from the pred. I get my blood done Monday and that will confirm it. I bruised even as a child prior to treatments with pred etc….and I really feel it is part of the diseases’ symptoms. I have 6 sisters and none of them bruise like I do and we are all fair and ‘thin skinned’. I do agree though, that prednisone worsens the problem… — Shelagh at ‘Lupus – Invisible in Plain Sight http://www3.telus.net/valleylupus/index.html Lupus Information and Support Contact for Everyone. don’t know about pred. I don’t take it. but I have periods of bruising that coincide with lower platelets. they usually last on me tho.

BJ, I’m very sorry that you’re not feeling well. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I saw the Rheumy today and he told me that they appear to be from the prednisone. He says the dosage I was on could interact with sun and cause the bruising. He said it normally happens on the forearms because it get the most exposure. I hope that you are feeling better soon, I’ll keep you in my thoughts. Take care. Teresa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -BJ wrote: > Hi Teresa, > Sorry to be so long in replying to you. Hi, I was wondering if anyone experienced bruising on a low dose of 10 mgs? In addition to my Lupus, I also have Immune ThromboCytopenia. I started out on 80 mgs at the beginning of the year and I’m down to 10 mgs this week and 400 mgs. of plaquenil. I’m starting to have some small bruising that goes away almost as quick as it comes and I’m trying to decide if its the meds or the ITP. BJ, if you read this, has this happened to you? Thanks Teresa
