Question:
Hi allan, Others will give you better responses I hope. I do know that pred can make you anxious, sleepless, hyper, etc. In some people it even induces a psychotic-like episode. Withdrawal effects after such a short course would surprise me but it may be possible. Of course, any of these symptoms can be part and parcel to MCTD. Lupus and other AI diseases are notorious for exhaustion. I have UCTD (a sort of "mild lupus") and have much nausea/cramping/dizziness. But I would suspect that she didn’t sleep very well (though she might not have been aware of it) during the time she was on the pred. Some of her exhaustion at this time could be making up for this. I believe my hubby was on a 6 day course of Pred (for an unrelated illness) and he didn’t have any changes that were noticeable. I assume this was a MedPack type of dose schedule where she took lower and lower doses with each day? If not – if she just took high doses for 10 days then quit, I would worry that this may have been hard on her. Do you know the dose schedule? kcat

Hi, My wife has been diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, an element of which is Lupus. She’s just finished a 10 day course of Prednisolone and I was wondering whether other people had an any after effects of the steroid. In my wife’s case, the past 2 or 3 days she’s felt very dizzy and nauseous and hasn’t managed to keep much food down at all. She’s also feeling exhausted and needs to sleep alot. Does this sound familiar? Allan

Prednisone for me was a big whopee drug. It makes me fly high for a while when I either get the shot or take the medrol dose pack. The symptoms of dizzy and nauseous may just be related to the MCTD/lupus. I have that very frequently and I am only on low dose medrol right now. Being tired may be due to low blood count. Many of us here get fatigued very easily and for me too darn many naps make me angry, but if I did not do it, I would be in bed all the time. Make sure wife gets some liquids in her since she can not keep food down. This is important in keeping her electrolytes normal.. Gatoraide is good for that and also pedialyte for the kids works good with some people. But if she has any sugar problems then watch out, they are high in sugar. Otherwise go for it. Thanks for being a good hubby to her, it shows you love her very much…She needs your support right now, this is a trying time and a trying disease with ups and downs, like a roller coaster. So post all you want and anything you would like to know Allan, we are here for you and the wife…Janers

Hi KCat, Thanks for taking the time to reply. She was on a fixed dose for 10 days, no lowering at all. Is this unusual? As far as I know, she’s always slept very well, and there was no change while on Pred. She did have a lot more energy though, and wasn’t as shatteringly exhausted as she usually is, so didn’t need all the extra naps. Sorry, this is all quite new and mindblowing for us! While I’m here, can I ask about pregnancy and steroids – what have other women been advised? In fact, what about MCTD (or Lupus) and pregnancy? We’re dying to have kids, but are petrified of, firstly, transmitting the condition to the kids and, secondly, of my wife having to endure months without medication. Thanks for the help, Allan.

Alan, please makes sure that the pred. hasn’t activated diabetes. It can do on high or prolonged dosage. If she’s thirsty as well, it’s important to test. I have exactly this reaction on prednisolone. It’s funny you should say that, because that was her first instinct – that maybe she was diabetic. We’ll definitely have it checked. Thanks, Nan.
