Maybe it was your childhood experiences (snip) Viewing Smoking And Drinking As Coping Mechanisms The CDC study also views habits like smoking and drinking as coping mechanisms — attempts to lessen childhood pain or ease distressing memories. "Behavior which we consider ‘bad’ is just a way of getting relief from the fact that you have to live with something terrible," says Anda." Did researchers not consider a "how old are you?" poll before assuming that smoking was an attempt to relieve childhood pain?  (vbg) Attitudes have changed significantly since the 40’s and 50’s.  Like most of my friends, my childhood included happy times watching movies  - movies in which the successful and sophisticated  people (or the really cool people like James Dean) all seemed to smoke.  People who we looked up to (teachers, neighbours, family members – even my minister)  openly smoked and, as they didn’t realize the health risks, didn’t warn us not to follow suit.  We began smoking because it was a "grown-up" thing to do, not because we needed relief from abuse. Even kids today smoke to emulate.  One troubled teen who happens to be popular in school can encourage a dozen others to spark up – no matter how informed, dedicated and caring their parents are, kids still actively seek the approval of their peers. Dear Julie. One of the diseases that was ruled out to give the docs certainty it is MS…. was lymes… along with sarcoma, lupus, some odd bleeding disorder called aedm….  and somthin else, I cannot remember what it was…  hate this brain fog sometimes… Lymes causes the same kinds of lesions in the brain, is a reaction of the body to fight the toxins that build up and actually recreate themselves thinking they are fighting something the tick dragged into the body after the bite. Wishin it was lymes sometimes..  <S> Hugs, Patti flowers wrote in message

<18795-35B1281…@newsd-162.iap.bryant.webtv.net>… Hi Chris: I would like to know how many people test positive or has tested positive to lyme. Lyme has the same symptoms but if not caught early within weeks they claim it will give you MS type symptoms and no antibioic will cure after the initial infection of about 8 weeks. Did you ever hear this about Lyme before. thanks Julie Just trying to figure out what is making us all sick.

"We began smoking because it was a "grown-up" thing to do," Chris, Absolutely.  Not to mention the simple fact that my mother, father and brother all smoked…  Once I was addicted…sure, smoking was there to relieve pressure, etc…but I was already totally addicted…  And everyone I knew smoked through JH,  HS and college… (50’s through 60’s)  Same thing with the "evening" cocktail hour…  We didn’t have the info available to us then!
