irritable bowel

Question:

G’day. I have Lupus and now I have also an irritable bowel. Does anyone of you have this problem too?

Response:

I have had irritable bowel symptoms without a formal diagnosis of IBS. The worst problems with it were long before I was diagnosed with lupus, though, so I don’t know if there’s a connection. I do still have some "processing" problems, but they may just be "me" or the lupus, not anything formal like IBS. G’day back!  My doc says I have IBS – however I’ve talked with folks that have IBS and their symptoms tend to be different from mine.  My worst symptom is what we call a "spastic colon" which is really just what it sounds like – typically a food that my body doesn’t appreciate irritates the colon and it begins spasming.  I can actually feel the spasm move around the length of the colon and the spasms come in waves where it will hurt like H*** for several minutes then I’ll get a few minutes break.  I have been given Librax to take with meals to try to prevent this though sometimes I don’t think what I’m eating will cause the problem because it’s something I’ve eaten a gazillion times before (ex: hotdogs).  The suddenly a single hotdog will have me writhing in a hot bath, gulping water and a drug called Bentyl which is stronger than Librax but non-addicting (but man it makes me feel very discombobulated).  Anyway.. I’ve had a ton of experiences with this particular problem, if you have any specific questions feel free to write.  If you have a spastic colon, a hot bath does ease the pain long enough for meds to kick in and take at least some of the pain away.  I’ve found the only thing that completely resolves the pain is about 24 hours without substantial food… Hence I have lost yet another 2 lbs this past week.. :( Let me know if my babbling can actually help. I have IBS symptoms which are exactly like KCqt’s.  Sometimes I think that I must be eating something I am alergic to, but the reality is that it makes no difference what I do or don’t eat, and there is no pattern or logic as to when I will have an "attack".  I can feel it coming with severe sharp pains in mid abdomen which works its way down.  Usually the ‘attack’ lasts for 30 -45 minutes, and then I am in bed recouperating for a day.  The pain is debilitating and I am very thankful that my husband is usually around to help me, because it is really scary when this happens.  I take bentyl 4 times a day routinely, and have levsin on hand to take when I feel an attack coming.  KCat, I agree with you…the bentyl makes me feel a little loopy, but my gastroenterologist told me not to give up on it and try taking it religiously for awhile.  I have been on it now for three weeks, and it is becoming tolerable. I also have not had a major attack since a couple of days after I started taking bentyl, so I think it is going to work ok.  I, too, have had IBS long before I was diagnosed with lupus, but it seems to have gotten much worse over the last few years.  I also have gasto-esophageal reflux disease.  I have had the upper GI and colonoscopy which did not show anything out of the ordinary.  I have assumed that the lupus medications I take (plaquenil and anti-inflamatories) have made it worse.  My rhemy insists that IBS is not lupus related, but I choose to disagree with him, because almost everyone I know with lupus has IBS. My best wishes to each of you.  This news group has been so helpful to me over the last few months.  Thank you for being there and sharing your experiences. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -KC wrote in message … >On Sun, 10 Oct 1999 21:41:07 +1000, "La Traviata" <ba…@one.net.au> >wrote: >>G’day. Weight loss was the primary symptom of my two bouts with the undiagnosed IBS. The first time I lost about 20 pounds in a month, with no pain. The second time, I lost only 15 pounds in a month, but with excruciating periodic intestinal cramping. I still get the cramping on rare occasions, but not nearly as often since I realized I’m lactose intolerant and began pre-treating my milk with lactase enzymes. They break down the lactose into sugar chains, so thet milk tastes slightly sweet. Be very careful with bowel problems when you are a lupus patient.  One form of the disease, lupus vasculitis, can attack the bowel with devastating results.  The docs caught it in my daughter in time.  If we had not had the correct tests (sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy) she would have needed major surgery.
