Question:
Hi all, I have a question; does hair dye cause any problems for lupus patients? I think I’ve heard something about it, but I can’t remember what or where or when. I’d like to get my highlights redone, but not if it means getting sicker! Thanks, Teresa — The Windows PC Versus Macintosh Buying Decision If you want to encourage your kids to color outside the lines, think creatively and zig when the other kids zag, get the Mac. On the other hand, if you want to teach your kid that life if full of frustration and that anything worth getting takes plenty of patience and hard work, a Windows machine should do quite nicely. – From "Modem Driver" columnist David Plotnikoff in the San Jose Mercury News

Hi, Teresa. I’ve been dying my hair every six weeks for years. I’ve never noticed any difference in my symptoms. This, of course, is not a medical fact — only my own experiences. Lori

There have been several threads about hair dyes & flares on the Lupus-L @Hamline Univ. the concensus seemed to be that lighteners are OK but the chemicals in darkening dyes can triggera flare. I wonder if one had an allergic reaction to the hair dye if it could cause a flare? In particular if using henna? I use henna occaisionally and seem to have a reaction to it.

There’s a chemical in hair dye that can cause flares; I forget what it is & I don’t have my lupus book. Also, I had a instant flare from a perm once. Hi, I’m another Teresa. I just wanted to share my experience with hair dye. I had to stop dying it because of scalp rash, hair loss and a serious flare. I dyed it dark brown and I have heard that brown and black are the most irritating colors. I have been in this flare since my last dye job in January 1998. I now have fast progressing lung involvement and serious CNS symptoms. My life has been totally changed. I used a water based, all natural salon dye. My new hairdresser says that highlighting is okay because it does not involve the scalp if done with foils. I also became very ill after using self tanners. I had used self tanners and hair dye for years without problems. I can no longer use hairspray and many shampoos and conditioners. I look back now and say if I knew then what I know now, the boost to my self esteem just wasn’t worth the physical damage. It’s really just emphasized that my esteem is function of my spiritual, not my physical being. This is a radical change because I used to be a model. Not to scare anyone, but just to warn you of my experience. Wellness to you all. Teresa Teresa1…@aol.com Teresa Teresa1…@aol.com

IMHO, as lupus is a systemic disease, you realy have no idea what additional toll the hair dye is taxing you. Boaz http://www.acor.org/lupus/ http://www.zeta.org.au/~sioux/mira always consult your medical practitioner
