Flu shots and lupus

Question:

Has anyone had a bad reaction to a flu shot? My Dr. wants me to take a pneumonia vaccine, (it’s a one time shot.) I just don’t know.     Thanks,   Zach

Response:

yes, and the cure was worse than having the flu!  I don’t get flu or pneumonia shots anymore!

I was diagnosed with Lupus in 1971, and have taken the flu shots almost every year with very few problems…….but that’s the way it is with folks with lupus, no two have the same of ANYTHING!

Response:

Zach, please be careful and take your current health into consideration before getting a flu or pneumonia shot.  If your lupus is flaring, these shots can be really dangerous…especially if your immunity is already compromised.  My doctor advised me that it would NOT be a good idea right now for me to get the shot(s), having been discharged from the hospital recently with blood clots in my lungs.  Sometimes, a dime’s prevention isn’t worth a pound of cure. Warm regards, Tee http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/8252 p.s. I lurk here infrequently…some of you may remember me.  Wishing all of you a happy holiday season! I do NOT have lupus but I work with children and get a flu vacine every year. I’ve never had a problem.  good luck

Response:

I was diagnosed with lupus six years ago.  I have taken the flu vaccine each year since and have not had the flu in six years.  My doctor tells me that I should take it because with lupus, my immune system is already overactive, and if I get sick that can make things even more active which could result in a bad flair.  Just as people have different symptoms and problems with lupus, that can be the case with the flu vaccine as well. Merry Christmas to all and a safe and healthy New Year! J

Response:

I have for the past three years had a flu vaccine and had not had the flu or a flare up after having the shot. I know that everybody reacts differently to the flu shot. But my doc says that if you are unwell prior to having the shot you should wait and then have it. I am glad to have the shot each year and I don’t get the flu so this means for me that I don’t have to spend two weeks in bed with the flu and a flare up as well. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -skee…@whocares.com wrote: > I was diagnosed with lupus six years ago.  I have taken the flu vaccine each > year since and have not had the flu in six years.  My doctor tells me that I > should take it because with lupus, my immune system is already overactive, > and if I get sick that can make things even more active which could result > in a bad flair.  Just as people have different symptoms and problems with > lupus, that can be the case with the flu vaccine as well. > Merry Christmas to all and a safe and healthy New Year! > J
