Question:
Hi again: Punctal plugs are tiny plugs the eye specialist can insert into your tear ducts (2 of them or all 4) to block the tears that form from leaving your orbs…. so enhancing the moisture level … of which I have zip! You can get temps done first to see if they work and then the permanent ones and it is a really simple procedure. You should have the litmus test done with your eye doc. re sjogrens and that tells if you have ‘dry eyes’ or not and then you can ask for the plugs IF you find that the tears, gels, creams, ointments etc. just don’t work … for me none of them last and the nights are horrible .. just like sandpaper when I open my eyelids my eyeballs scream …. oh wow it hurts soooo much. And I wake up every morning with ‘gooey eyes’, sometimes infected and other times just gunky and sore and then other times full on conjunctivitis! So get checked out for sure! And then at least you’ll know that something can be done! Thinks: many people with lupus also have Sjogrens-related symptoms, which includes dry eyes. Thanks for the insight. I have been to an eye specialist before regarding this – they thought it was an infection. That’s the only info I got from the opth. GP thought it was to do with colitis, and last time I had this problem gave me drops with a combination of prednisone and antibiotic (drops). I had used antibotic ointment without any difficulties. One of those drugs seemed to exacerbate the eye. It became 100 times worse and I ended up at emergency (couldn’t see out of the eye – real mess). At emergency they said it was an extreme conjunctivitis and they could see white blood cells. What are punctal plugs? Something that helps moisturize the eye? It’s a really aggravating problem, which had cleared up real well on oral prednisone. I see my GI in a couple of weeks and I’m going to ask to be put back on prednisone (jeez…I’m really saying this!). My GI’s not too keen on this as I have osteopenia and I have only been on prednisone twice (for fairly short periods) since developing UC. Yes. Most patients I see with dry eyes, dont present because they feel dry, more that they are sticky or gunky. Yes Sjogrens or meds are all possibilities Lyndal "Andy" <a…@kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk> wrote in message

Hmm…..mine don’t hurt like that – at least not at this time. Certainly your eyes when waking sounds like mine. I’ll keep the litmus test in mind when I go in. I haven’t made an appt. recently as I was waiting to see if it will clear up. It’s been cloudy here today and yesterday, and everything feels better. Having a Lupus diagnosis seems pretty involved compared to UC – I keep thinking this whole sunny/cloudy thing is a coincidence. Just wondering if anyone has had any sort of eye problems with their Lupus? My eyes have been really irritated and there is quite a lot of yellow junk (excuse the description) that seems to come out throughout the day. My eyes get pretty red, although it’s not exactly conjunctivitis. I’ve had this before and oral Prednisone is the only thing that seems to help it. — Maureen Remove "NOMORESPAM" from address

like Barb my first thought was overlapping Sjogrens. What other meds do you take – if you don’t mind my asking… There are many meds that will cause major dry mouth, eyes and so on. I’m on at least 3! Have you had this checked? Have you ever had iritis? In the FAQ there is mention of one of the blood tests seen pos. in Sjogren’s but I’m sorry I don’t remember it off hand. Might be worth looking into.
