Dietary Changes

Question:

Hi all, I wanted to share something positive.  I have CNS Lupus and Spondyloarthropathy and a list of other health companions that occur with each rheumatic disease.  My health at this time is good, I’m in remission (mild symptoms) with Lupus. In September I began to change my diet due to being overweight but also because my gut just couldn’t take food anymore.  It was painful to eat.  Spondyloarthropathy does affect the gut, then you add vasculitis and GERD and you have a mess.  Did many diet’s over the years, used meds to diet, all with little real results.  Many medication’s can cause weight gain. Dunk had asked about leaky gut syndrome, there is truth to this condition, that’s another story tho.  I had known about this condition from the time of my dx of Spondy.  I began to read Dr. Atkins book, found it to be way to restrictive but found some interesting theories to hold onto, then read Suzanne Somers book and found her theories were somewhat similar to Atkins but was less restrictive, all in all both theories present that you do not mix certain food groups together. I adapted my thought process and eating behavior, I found that there was some truth in my case (everyone is individual) to combining carbs and proteins in the same meal, I felt sick, bloated and digestion was painful. Once I began to apply not combining specific foods I noticed a significant change, one I lost weight, really, not a promotion, I have lost 55lbs since September, atleast 10+ of that as water weight.  I then began to notice I felt better, my stomach didn’t bloat, digestion was painless and occurred quicker, my GERD subsided to pretty much nothing now and I notice the lack of sudden allergic reactions and headaches. I guess what I’m trying to say is that making dietary changes for me has allowed me to see that my eating habits were affecting my overall health besides weightgain.  As soon as I do a test of the theory and combine proteins and carbs, I bloat, feel sick to my stomach and feel run down. I took what I could from those books and discarded the rest, but what I have learned is that my gut is so overly sensitive (meds over 20 years have damaged the gut) that the theories in these books applied to my ability to adapt and use a new approach. Hopefully this approach will have a lasting effect, it’s only been 5+ months. I’m not promoting, just sharing, I think we all know that certain dietary changes can be beneficial to how we feel, so hope this confession will be useful to others. Steph

Great to hear about your success!!! I will have a look at the Atkins Diet to see what it entails. I seem to have a problem with carbohydrates – even on there own. I think this is why the paleolithic diet works well for me – which I have been led to beleive is quite similar to atkins in many respects. My cousin has chronic fatigue syndrome & has had much success with the atkins diet. Well your not the only one who has lost weight. I have lost 64 pound in weight over the last 18 months – while on the paleolithic diet. My weight has levelled out at a respectable 160 pounds (which was my normal weight about 10 years ago). My skin sensitivity to light is gone & all other symtoms are greatly reduced. Funny thing though – a few weeks ago I introduced dairy products back in to my diet for only 7 days & gained 5 pounds in weight. Another 7 days on after coming of it I was back to my original weight. I then told a non lupie friend at work about this who is always trying to diet. She stopped dairy products & 10 days later had lost 5 pounds. I don’t think there is any coinsidence about this though. Anyway it encourages me to do more and look further in to these things when I hear about success stories like yours & others. Dunk

my only caution to anyone on the Atkin’s diet (or similar) is to keep up with their biannual kidney function tests.  If you have kidney involvement with lupus you can do more harm than good with too much protein.  That said, I’m glad ya’ll are doing well on this.  Do keep us informed on it. *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.  The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’
