what do you tell your hairdresser?

Question:

I don’t know what you guys do but I don’t get hair cuts often and when i do i usually go to different salons. {b/c of costs, or time, or something}  and so today…..i go to this place and the girl who was gonna wash my hair was like, a size negative 2 and so i was thinking she could possibly be EDed {and so most likely she wouldn’t question my thin hair b/c she’d know why it was that way}. But when she washed my hair, I got the usual questions…."do you know your hair is very thin? do you try to make it thicker by using any special shampoos?"  {well no….what’s the point of that if my thin hair is caused by my diet?}  and then the lady that cut my hair was like, "you know your hair is very thin, {is it?!  oh my god, i hadn’t realized! i guess i don’t look in the mirror often enough!}  do you eat any meat?"  No, I don’t eat meat. And she continued forever about what i should eat and about all these products I should look into to make my hair thicker….i just sat there and tried to think of a way to change the conversation without making it look like i didn’t want to talk about my hair and couldn’t come up with anything….so, what do you guys say to your hairdresser? and what’s their reaction?

Response:

Julie, I have VERY thick hair..even when I was underweight, my hair has always been really thick and the topic of many hairdressers when I would come in for a cut. They would all gather around (if they werent doing anything) and ask me what my diet was because they thought it HAD to be something I was doing to make it that thick. So I had the opposite problem. I wasnt eating anything, yet my hair remained long and thick.  Now when I go to the hairdresser, I am self-conscious because I have discoid lupus lesions on my scalp and am afraid the hairdresser will think I have some kind of contagious disease. Going to get my hair cut is always an anxiety ridden event for me, especially lately. Sorry you had to go through that with your hairdresser. You can try to supplement your diet with some vitamins..that might help with your hair too Love Nikki "… lost in the darkness of my own circumstance, criticizing echoes leaving me awake in the night… the barrier and blockades that keep me safe and in control while I pretend that I am okay… "

Response:

Just say it runs in the family and hopefully that will shut him or her up. Also, I would just simply say that you are not comfortable talking about what you do and don’t eat. Tell her that you get too many comments because you are vegetarian. If he or she doesn’t get the hint then they don’t have much UNDER their hair. Response:

It’s funny. I went to the hairdresser on wednesday and she kept saying how nice my hair was. I thought she’d be appalled by it what with my lack of nutrition. Beth — ("Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.")

I didnt see the original post on this but :) my hair is thin and it got thinner on the top, where i was lucky is my cousin is also my beautician and she already knew about my ED…about 9 months ago my Dr’s told me to drink ensure plus started out with 3-4 a day and now with the amounts of food that i can eat 2 a day and my hair is growing back :) Now they didnt bother to tell me that it would be GREY LOL but it is growing back :) so i go and have it glitzed (sp?) to hide the grey :) "im just not ready for grey" I know the ensure dont taste to good but in my case it has been well worth the taste and the money, i feel so much better and hope someday to be able to have total control of my ED and need ensure plus no more :) "sharing" Jackie
