I’ve had the numbness a few times, no steroids (I don’t tolerate them well) but my Dr feels it is one of those things that pretty much goes away with no treatment. So far he has been right. An earlier doc did CT on both wrists – it did not make any difference. BTW – has anyone had to have a joint replacement due to Lupus? A friend is facing this and I wanted to know more about it from a personal (been there/done that)point of view -=JR=-

Hi, posted this earlier but no response so I’m trying again. Has anyone, diagnosed with lupus, had experiences with numbness in the hands/fingers and been treated with steroids for the condition? I’m curious as to how long the length of the steroid treatment was for and if it reoccured quickly. Thanks.
Response:
I don’t have lupus but I’m a rheumatologist who treats lupus patients. Numbness in the hands can be from lupus affecting the peripheral nerves or it can be from constriction of the median nerve as it goes through the wrist, so called carpal tunnel syndrome. Sometimes patients get inflammation of the blood vessels that feed the nerves. This is the most serious kind of nerve involvement. Fortunately the test she is having, the EMG and nerve conduction study should be able to distinguish which type of nerve involvement she has and whether she needs to take steroids for this. How much and how long will depend on how exztensive the involvement is and what else is happening with the rest of her illness. Also sometimes patients with lupus can get another problem such as diabetes, thyroid disease, B12 deficiency, so it is worthwhile looking for these. In addition to her rheumatologist, she should consult a neurologist. Best wishes and she is lucky to have a daughter like you.
