Incredible Hulk?

Question:

No reason to be sorry, some of us are better at reading than responding. I think it is grand that people here are from everywhere.  My little world is pretty much my little world, I don’t see people from other countries and I think it is great. I would like to know what people do where they live and what it looks like, what they do, where they have been.  Curiousity… :)

Love your name– I have had lupus for 16 years next month and have gotten more from this group than anyplace else.  Really admire all the effort that the group puts into information sources for helping to understand this stinky disease. I have no knowledge to add except what works for me and what doesn’t. I live in Northern California  half way between San Francisco and Oregon border in a little town of 1100 people. We run an Inn and when I don’t feel like doing anything we take a lot of stuff out of the freezer. What state is your little world in?    cheers   Ruth

I agree about the group. Things I would never think to question and things I am told I just take to be so, I am finding out that is not true or that I should at least question them.  I am not much for confrontation though, and some it seems do not like to be questioned. I live with my brother and my father. We have cabins on the Guadalupe river that we lease, rent, whatever.  It is beautiful at this time of the year in the hill country of Texas,  cool nights.   :)

Hi Jackie, I am an hour outside of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley and my son is in downtown Van. so we go to the city alot…. in part to take the ferry across from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo where some of my husbands’ family lives. We love the island,  especially Victoria, the windy city, and the open west coast of Long Beach so wild and beautiful! We plan to RV over there alot now that we are retired! So nice not to have a schedule anymore…did you like Vancouver and Victoria when you were there? I have an aunt who I write to regularly in Costa Mesa, CA…..are you near there? All for now, Shelagh. Hi BJ, I’m British by birth.  (Born 1936).  After the WWII, my dad wanted to leave England.  In 1947, we emigrated to Canada. Crossed the Atlantic on the old Aquitania, landed at Halifax, took train to Oshawa, lived there til 1949.  My dad’s perpetual itchy foot and firm belief that the grass is always greener etc., took us to Vancouver and six months later to Victoria. Mom even got him to buy a house in Victoria but it didn’t hold him.  18mos later we were moving on to the US. Went to Pasadena, CA (Home of the Rose Parade).  6mos later here we go again!  This time to Boston, MA.  It was summer, terribly hot and humid. Mom said NOWay!.  So its back to CA.  Mom got a good job and since she was the better earner she used that as a lever and got a promise to stay put.  By that time I’d finished High School met my future DH (just back from Korea with the USAF.) He got a job as a police officer in Ontario, CA – founded and developed by the Chaffey family from — you guessed it, Ontario, Canada.  Thirty some years and three sons later, we retired and moved to a lovely spot at about 6000ft on the eastern side of the Sierra’s near the Nevada border.  I’m relatively near Judith whom  you know from the ASL ng. Haven’t met her tho’. I do have relatives in Toronto but we don’t communicate. Hubby is a home-body but I have very real hopes of getting him to visit BC and Alberta in the near future. Probable much more info than you anticipated.  However, once again my memory has been primed and I must thank you again! I really enjoy hearing from the Canadians on the ng.  I really did enjoy my years in Canada.  Good schools!  Beautiful surroundings where ever I went. Really friendly people.  At that time at least, a very peaceful environment. I loved the cooler weather than there is in Southern CA.  One reason we moved to our present location is to escape the heat of So. Cal. (Not to mention smog, crowds, smog, traffic, smog, crime, smog – you get the picture!) Saskatchewan  (did I spell that right?) winter sounds as tho’ it would be more than I would like to take on at my age.  How are the summers?  I remember reading an autobiography of a woman who was a WWII war bride from Britain who followed her soldier husband to his home in Sask.  Don’t recall where tho.  In 1946, 47 she encountered rather primitive conditions in a newly developed townsite.  She felt like a modern day pioneer.  She did grow to love it – even tho’ her memories had a lot of wind, dust and mud in them. Of course, I have those here! Aren’t you one of the Canucks (Sp?) who is always so stylishly dressed?  I got lucky in Reno (our nearest city – 225 milies north of us) and found some great pajama bottoms (on sale) with wide legs that won’t bind when they get hung up on flannel sheets and that will go well with some seldom-worn shirts.  Hubby wanted to know why I was buying pants with stars on them?  Silly Man! Please tell me more about Sask. and your life there. Take care and keep warm Hugs, Jackie

Hello Shelagh and BJ, You are stirring my memories on this sunny Southern California morning!  I spent a few years in Oshawa, Ontario as a child (more than 50 yrs ago now !!!!).  One of my favorite memories is of putting on my skates at home, crunching up the snowy/icy street to the flooded, frozen school yard and skating alone in the light of the crackling northern lights.  How my imagination flew!  Sometimes I was the Sugar Plum fairy, others I was the star of a racing team.  I’ll never forget the exhilaration and joy of that experience. Hi Everyone, I have started on a protein powder used by body builders. I mix it with soy milk and some fresh fruit to make a shake. The salesman was a young man who was built like the Incredible Hulk. I asked if I could look like him if I faithfully drank this mixtured. He looked at my 5 ft., 91/2 in.,frame, smiled, and admitted that he had his doubts. I think that KCat said she took one of these drinks. Perhaps others do too. Has anyone gained muscle mass, weight, or even better, energy from such a concoction? Regards, BJ

Response:

Ya’ll are SO mean to each other. :) I took the list of ingredients in to my rheumy and got her approval. There is nothing in them that is touted as an "immune" booster. (I’m speaking *specifically* of the stuff I’m using.) I wish I could report great results… but since I just can’t get into the habit of fixing the drink daily… The problem is, the drink contains enough calcium that I would worry about it interferring with my med absorption – so I have to drink it "far away" enough from med doses to assure that this doesn’t happen (ditto for vitamin pills).  But at night is when I always think about having a shake – and that’s when dose #2 of the day rolls around.   definitely have your doc approve the drink.  And note the amount of protein in it.  Most supplements that claim to boost muscle mass will be high protein.  This is fine if your kidneys are healthy.  Mine seem to be.  But if you’ve had any kidney trouble than you need to be highly selective of your supplemental drinks and foods. The drink I am using is uh… Reliv (pronounced "re-leev") just so ya’ll will know.  Reliv makes some products that I wouldn’t recommend for us because they have extra high protein or contain things like echinacea.  But the "Classic" and "Pro" seem to be okay for me.  One of them contains chromium which I worried about somewhat as it is used in some forms to increase metabolism.   If we could just eat a balanced diet – we’d be a lot better off.  I do actually *like* the drinks – they remind me of "Tiger’s Milk" and Ovaltine from days of old.  Malty, a little grainy.  kinda like reverting to childhood when my mom knew I wasn’t eating well either. And then there’s today.  I have *no* desire to eat anything.  But I’m getting weak just sitting here so I best go try to eat *something*. It’s 5 p.m., I’ve had one Ensure and 1/4 of a ham sandwich (I ordered Turkey d*mn it!!!)  some water.  I think I may be in a remeron haze next week to try to boost the appetite.  So if I say anything even more bizarre than usual – chalk it up to that. so much for being back *up* to 107 I’m afraid.  Won’t get on the scale…

Hi KCat, You will see the name of the product in my reply to Janers, who by the way, isn’t being at all mean. She just likes to tease me. It is high protein. I got it from a body builder’s store. I don’t really see anything on there that looks bad, but then maybe I just don’t know. I don’t have kidney problems, so I think it would be okay. Boy, you sure don’t eat much. I eat much more than that, but just can’t seem to gain muscle or fat. When I wake from my usual afternoon crash, I am ravenous and grab cookies, chips, or anything that is handy. I tend to graze pretty much all day. It works best for me, as I can’t eat a lot at one time. Regards, BJ "KCat" <kcdoc…@ghg.net> wrote in message

Now that I would like Andy. Since we are talking champaign, do you know of a good wine, not dry and not too sweet?    I drank 2 glasses of wine one night only to find out that gee I could not sleep. My BIL told me to check the level of sugar in the glass by rolling the wine in the glass and if the sides look slippery and stick then you got too much sugar.  Kept me up all night haha I do enjoy, once in a blue moon, a glass.  But sure don’t want to do that again. Zifendels is good less sugar. Any suggestions since you know so much about champaign, I thought gee maybe a wine counisure  (can’t spell that word.) tee hee janers
