Thanks, I never looked at it that way. After spending 20 years in the USAF, I am not accustomed to looking at what I do as particularly "peaceful." But, I believe I will be leaving that profession next year anyway. I should finish my MS next spring and hope to acquire a job as a Software Engineer where I am in NO WAY responsible for the care and feeding of 140, 18-21 year-olds. Cheers. Tim

Hi Everyone…thanks for all your help. I apologize for taking so long to respond…have been going to the drs. pretty much non-stop lately. I just can’t seem to get over this latest flare…then to top it off I reacted really bad to the dosage of Imuran/methotrexate. AHHHHH! I was so sick! Anyway, I also asked my doctor (rheumy)…she said it looked like trauma to the nails and was blood underneath…otherwise she had no idea. I still have them and I plan on checking with my GP in two weeks, especially based on some of the info you guys provided. that would have been my logic. under the nail – tiny injuries resulting in blood or "bruising". on the nail, fungal.

Sonja, I spent quite a while looking up this symptom on the net last night. I am just a jet mechanic, and would not pretend to be a doctor, but pages I read seemed to believe it should be brought to a doc’s attention immediately. Below are some of the links I found dealing specifically what appears to be termed splinter hemorrhages. There are many more. Since I am going to the Doc this morning, I intend to bring it up. http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/section16/chapter208/208b.htm http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003283.htm Tim

I have had these for years, but have never been able to get any USAF docs to figure out what they are or why I get them. Now I am curious all over again… Tim
Response:
Hi Sonja, Since Tim has them too, I’ll assume it’s not black "dots" (and assuming it’s not fungal or under the nail bruising). Think I get those (black dots) when I keep nail polish on for too long a period (and don’t give the nails a chance to breathe). Black spots (if you can ignore the other stuff). http://www.aryabhatt.com/articles/nails.htm 1. If there are black spots or dots on the nails, such subjects have criminal and sensuous tendencies. They may suffer from skin and blood related diseases.<snip> hehe…maybe in their culture sensuous= criminal? Anyhow, that last part about the skin or blood related disease, might be on the mark. Of course, someone could ask a manicurist, I expect they might know, maybe. Hi Sonja, Are the black spots actually on the nail, or are they under the nail? I think they might be small hemorrages if they are under the nail. They would grow out with the nail. That could be caused by a platelet count that is a little low due to suppressing drugs. I supposed it could be a fungal thing as well, if it is on the nail itself. Hi everyone… Have any of you guys ever had black spots on your fingernails? I’m not sure if this is medicine related or Lupus, but I have these black spots on my nails and they grow out with the nail…Maybe infection? I do take several immunosupressants. Anyone? Thanks in advance, Sonja
