Question:
Oriole: Thanks for your reply. My hair is exactly the same as yours. Fine, extremely thin, limp, etc. I hate it. I will check into the "fragile hair perm" you mentioned when I get my hair cut tomorrow. Thanks. JBAB
Response:
My hair has been thinning for several years now, rheumy doesn’t think its due to Lupus, but who knows. In any case, I have extremely fine, limp hair, which looks like a $1.98 wig that I bought on sale. My only hope for some sort of body is a perm…..my stylist gives me what’s called a "fragile hair perm", and monitors it every step of the way while it’s processing. She’ll even unroll a rod and show me that no hair is coming out on it. Just something you might want to check out next time you’re at the salon. :)

Kim and KCat: Thanks so much for your replies. I am only taking 200/mg Plaquenil right now (no Prednisone). The hair loss has improved since I am on the Plaquenil (2 years now). I do have the new Lupus Book by Daniel Wallace and I will read that section soon I hope. Kim, I was dx in May of 98 prob. around the time you were. I was only thinking about the perm right now. My hair is so fine and thin and I really don’t want to lose anymore than I already have. Maybe I’ll ask my rheumy when I see him in Oct. Thanks. JBAB

The possible offender in hair dyes, especially dark colors, may be found on pages 41 and 42 of Daniel Wallace’s The Lupus Book, circa de 1999. { Aromatic amines—chemical agents that may induce or aggravate rheumatic disease. class includes hair-coloring solutions, hydrazines(tobacco smoke), and tartrazines(food colorings or medication preservatives). Aromatic amines are broken down in the body by a process known as acetylation. An increased incidence of drug-induced lupus has been observed after exposure to aromatic amines in patients who are slow acetylators, or those who metabolize aromatic amines slowly. About half of all Americans are slow acetylators. The mechanism by which aromatic amines may induce an immunologic reaction is poorly understood, and only a small percentage of people exposed to these chemicals develop clinical immune disease.Hair-coloring solutions containing aromatic amines, specifically paraphenylenediamine, can reproduce features of auto immune disease in experimental animals. Several large-scale epidemiologic surveys that have tried to find out whether aromatic amines induce lupus or cancer have yielded conflicting results. Do I advise my lupus patients to avoid hair dyes? No, since I rarely see patients who reported a flareup because they used a hair-care product; also, they already have the disease when they visit me………}(just in case you don’t have his book.) Sorry so long, just trying to help. And I can’t sleep. Have joint soreness. The article goes on, this is just the relevant part to hair dyes. I don’t know how it might affect hair loss but I have heard that perms and colorings are not recommended for lupies (it may be the coloring that is most objectionable – sorry, don’t recall). I believe it is because the chemicals can *potentially* trigger flares or skin reactions. Since I’ve done neither (had a "wave" some 20 years ago) I really don’t know how far off my comments are or how much potential reaction there is. Perhaps more folks here have actually *done* this and can help. *********************************** KCat http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._ (`6_ 6 ) `-. Hi everyone: Hope someone can answer this for me. I have SLE and in the past 2 years have experienced some mild hair loss off and on. Right now, the hair loss is not too bad. I would love to get a perm, but havent had one in my hair for about 5 years. Does anyone know if perming or coloring your hair can cause hair loss or damage the hair where it would cause it to fall out? I’d appreciate anyones input or experience with this? Thanks JBAB
Response:
Jbab7542~~Hi! Because some hair loss is associated with SLE, and I don’t know what meds you may be taking, it is hard to offer a concrete opinion. When I was on plaquenil, I had no loss, but over time, the prednisone did cause just some very mild loss. When I started chemo, I lost it all. I have a wonderful stylist who has hung in there with me through it all, and though I have never permed my hair, I did use a henna rinse several times, and had no advanced hair loss problems. I just missed the way my hair turns with a hint of red when I’ve been out in the sun. I have a dark complexion, have never worried about sun exposure until SLE hit me in ‘98, now it’s no more sun!!! Hopefully, you’ll get more responses from others, we tend to be a rowdy bunch here, so I’m sure you will. Good luck and happy hair do!!
