Extremely Resistant Yeast Infection

Question:

My wife was diagnosed with Lupus approximately 2.5 years ago.  She has been on Plaquenil for ~ 2 years along with Elavil.  Six months ago the doctor added Atenolo and Depakote.  I’m providing the medications in case the information might help those on the list answer my question. For the past year or so, she has suffered with an extremely resistant yeast infection; it just simply won’t go away for any extended period of time.  And lately, within the past 60 days or so, it will not go away at all!   Does anyone know if yeast infections are related to Lupus or any of the above medications? Of course we intend to seek help from the doctors, but as many of you are probably experiencing…often, these things are difficult to trouble shoot.  Possibly depending on the doctor’s skill and experience with the disease, medications, patient, etc. Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to provide, //pete

I have something of the same experience.  I was put on very expensive medication to get rid of a yeast infection but it didn’t do anything.  My Rhumy said she has had a lot of female patients complain about the same thing.  Something that won’t go away.  I am on prednisone, plaquenil and methotrexate and she told me it is from the drugs.  I basically just live with it because I am not getting and answers of what to do.  Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -pete graycar wrote in message <387414CA.70787…@ix.netcom.com>… >My wife was diagnosed with Lupus approximately 2.5 years ago.  She has >been on Plaquenil for ~ 2 years along with Elavil.  Six months ago the >doctor added Atenolo and Depakote.  I’m providing the medications in >case the information might help those on the list answer my question. >For the past year or so, she has suffered with an extremely resistant >yeast infection; it just simply won’t go away for any extended period of >time.  And lately, within the past 60 days or so, it will not go away at >all! >Does anyone know if yeast infections are related to Lupus or any of the >above medications? >Of course we intend to seek help from the doctors, but as many of you >are probably experiencing…often, these things are difficult to trouble >shoot.  Possibly depending on the doctor’s skill and experience with the >disease, medications, patient, etc. >Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to provide, >//pete

Prednisone has to do with thrush and stuff in the mouth, don’t know if it causes it or just makes you more susceptible.  Pete wrote: > >Does anyone know if yeast infections are related to Lupus or any of the > >above medications?

I think Prednisone might.  I also have a problem with an infection, in my mouth however, on my tongue and such.  The doctor worried that it might be more widespread, so I am being treated with Oral Diflucan right now, it seems to be working.  The first time we tried it the infection *almost* went away, but not quite.  It’s a 7 day thing, pills, and the recommendation is to continue it a bit longer if it doesn’t quite do the trick.  Well, I should have gotten more pills but didn’t and so it came back, the infection that is, and I started treatment again about a few days after, which maybe why it seems so resistant (the infection).  Maybe you ought to ask your doctor about Diflucan… hope this helps! :) -k

Lupus and Yeast infections are not directly connected.  However, prednisone and other immunosuppressants definitely make you more suseptable to yeast infections by taking away your ability to fight against yeast and other kinds of infections.  Methotrexate and Imuran can affect the good bacteria in your vaginal and oral cavities allowing the yeast bacteria to overtake the areas.  It has to do with affecting the cell division. (You also get yeast infections when you take certain antibiotics.)   In addition to using the prescribed medications, it helps to eat yogurt with active cultures or take acidophilus pills.  Yeast infections are a common problem in all immunosuppressed patients–any AIDS clinic can tell you that.   Tracy

I found info in a book about Sjogren’s symdrome which states that the use of OTC Yeast medications can successfully be used orally to rid the mouth of thrush. Hugs, Kris Address is SPAM blocked.  ****Remove map.son from address.****

Have you tried using acidopholis (yogurt culture) along with anti-fungal drugs? I’ve been told that these are a good defense in combating yeast infection. Also, apparently there are other homeopathic remedies which can work. Just a thought. Hugs, Kris Address is SPAM blocked.  ****Remove map.son from address.****
