I was clenching my teeth in my sleep, too, and my jaw would ache all day. Went to the dentist, a mouth guard would’ve cost upwards of $400. Went to the rheumy and metnioned it in passing; he gave me muscle relaxants, and they made all the difference. I found that I don’t even have to take them regularly. Took them for about two weeks at first, then the problem seemed to go away. No and again, it reoccurs (stress at work, whatever), and I take one before bed, and I feel much better. Make sure the Dr checks you over regularly, in case something hidden starts to develop. have you tried a muscle relaxant – my jaw pain is due to the muscles around the hinge spasming and it is excruciating so I know what you are talking about. I didn’t find hot or cold to be of any use. I’ve had TMJ problems off and on for years. At times the pain is unbearable to the point that I don’t want to eat (which is not necessarily a bad thing), talk, or even smile. In addition to additional pain killers, I found a mouth guard (made by the dentist) was of <some> help. I notice I tend to tense up when in pain and the mouth guard helps me relax my jaw. I use it only as needed, usually at night. Good luck. CP

Depends on the root of the problem I suppose (sorry, couldn’t resist, bad pun), but when I needed mine done the pain was all along my jaw and I couldn’t really identify which tooth was the problem (they all hurt to bite on), but when the dentist tapped lightly on the tooth with something metal I just about went through the roof. Worsening heat and/or cold sensitivity are more likely to be a tooth problem than jaw. Do go to the dentist, one way or another they can give you some pain relief, and if you do need to get a root canal they should at least be able to kill the tooth until you can get it done. Suzanne

TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint (jaw, for short). The term TMJ is also often used as a way of referring to a chronic jaw pain disorder, often involving clenching and grinding of teeth. That’s actually not technically the correct term for it (though it’s close), but it’s the one you hear used most often nevertheless. Sandra

I actually found that _ice_ worked faster than warmth for a locked up jaw. What I loved was the sheet my doctor gave me when I first had the problem. Got it! It’s the Temporomandibular Joint – basically it’s where your lower joint is attached to the rest of your skull, just in front of your ears. It is a complicated joint, and full of bits to get inflammation in. If you put your finger in your earhole, and open & shut your mouth, you can feel the TMJ at work. — Andy For Austrian philately <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps/> For Lupus <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/> For my other interests <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/>

Thanks again everyone. After reading through all of the possible explanations and causes I got a little worried and took your advice. I just got back from the dentist’s (they were able to see me immediately) and it was in fact TMJ. She gave me some Motrin 800 as anti-inflammatories (which of course, being a bit paranoid and scared of weird reactions with medications) I called the rheumy to get the A-OK. He said that if it’s not doing better by the time I see him on Monday that maybe we’ll do a cortisone injection to take care of it. what fun! thanks again…and take care. -julia jf <jfrid…@mediaone.net> wrote in message

This may sound ignorant, but would it hurt if I touched or knocked on my teeth if it was that I was in need of a root canal. It’s entirely possible that I may need one because the dentist replaced some fillings a few months ago and told me that if they don’t take care of it and the cold sensitivity continues that I may need a root canal. Maybe I’ll give her a call just in case. Thanks again everyone for your input…I’ll let you know what happens. I really hate to tell you this, but this sounds very like the pain I had when I needed a root canal in a lower jaw molar – the pain refelcted along my whole jaw. It could be a inflammation problem, my dentist says he can often see the sign of systemic inflammatory diseases like lupus in teeth and gums. At least if you go to a dentist, they can give you some good pain relief. Suzanne

My advice to you though would be to go to the dentist anyway and make sure it isn’t one of your teeth causing the pain. I also understand about the jaw pain. In fact, I can vouch for the fact that TMJ can be extremely painful. I have a combination of TMJ and arthritis in my jaw. When it flares up, the pain can be unbearable. I find that taking the pain medications I’ve been prescribed well help with this. If I take them, the pain will gradually subside over about three days. If I just try to tough it out, my muscles start to tense up making it worse and I will suffer with the pain for days and days, even weeks sometimes. If it’s really bad, I’ve gone to the dentist for it. The dentist can inject some anesthetic and numb the area. That can give my jaw a chance to rest and get over the attack. He also checks to be sure the pain isn’t being caused by a cavity or tooth problem. So far, such has never been the case and the problem has always been my jaw itself. I can’t promise this will be the case for you, but it’s always a possibility. BTW, not all dentists are equally good at dealing with TMJ problems (yes, this is common with lupus). You might want to look for one who specializes in TMJ problems. Sandra
Response:
Sounds a little like TMJ. You may have over-worked the jaw chewing gum and inflamed something in there. Now you have pain. I’d lay off the gum chewing. Try to give the jaw a rest. Say something to the Rheumy maybe he’ll give you an anti-inflammatory. I’ve had a few bouts with trigeminal neuralgia and that is from the nerves that run through that area – that is painful! But I don’t need to move the jaw to have pain. My daughter had TMJ for a while due to uneven jaw growth as a young teen. I watched her suffer with it. Really bad! Doc is more apt to send you to an orthodontist than a dentist. Julia, From time to time I have discomfort in my mouth and it seems that my body no longer likes my dental bridges, etc. After a time it clears up but sometimes it is really painful.
