Yes. See <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/faqshets/faqs17.htm> for some more info. — Andy For Austrian philately <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps/> For Lupus <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/> For my other interests <URL: http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/>

It can be but is not necessarily. A condition known as Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) is an overlap of scleroderma, lupus and polymyositis/dermatomyositis. The two illnesses share a lot of traits but scleroderma (as indicated by it’s name) tends to do more damage to the dermal layers both inside and out – causing taut, shiny skin, loss of elasticity in virtually any part of the body. SLE does attack the skin in many people but is not by definition a skin disease. (DLE - Discoid lupus would be the obvious exception to that comment but like SLE, DLE can have joint effects and some other systemic effects). check out Andy’s URL he posted.. also if you want more URLs, there should be a few in the FAQ http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm Take care, kcat
Response:
It’s actually a separate disease entity, but it can and does sometimes occur in conjunction with lupus. When it does, the condition is usually labeled MCTD (mixed connective tissue disease). Sandra

It is also an autoimmune disease. Anti SCL-70 (though can be positive in 10% of polymyositis/dermatomyostis cases) and anti centromere are specific for scleroderma. Sometimes though a peson can actually have more than one autoimmune disease at work. Seems a lot of the people I know- including myself- have a grocery list of diseses lol.
