Question:
Hi! I have the same problem with chest pain while breathing. This occurs after I take my daily walk and at night. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. I have had doctors give me two dx. One said it was rheumatic lung disease; another costoclavitis (inflammation of the costoclavical ribs). I have been treated with Prednisone and inhalers (Ventolin and Flovent). The inhalers help ease the onset of the pain. I hope this helps. Feel better soon:) Shari Raleigh, NC Mlang6969 <mlang6…@aol.com> wrote in message

hi was just reading thru and found this. i have had lupus for >34 yrs. and everytime i feel like i am going to flare i have this type of pain you are describing, a dr. told me a long time ago that it is very common in lupus patients he had seen. yes it is very painful and i always increase my steroid dose at the first sign of it, before i even call my dr. good luck. maggie Mlang6969 <mlang6…@aol.com> wrote in message

Hi, I don’t know if this was meant for me but it sounds like it. No to both, no coughing in the AM and maybe once when laying down. My dr blow me off with panic attacks and take more Zoloft. I forgot to included on my other post my family history on heart problems as staggering. Costochondritis, inflammation of the rib cartilages. From experience it can be excruciatingly painful, especially when taking a deep breath, sneezing, hiccuping etc. There’s a fairly easy test for it – prod yourself reasonably hard around the edge of your breastbone and if you howl, then it’s probably costo
It usually reflects as pain over the breastbone but can also affect where the ribs join the spine at the back, or around the lower margins. It’s quite hard to treat, except with anti-inflammatories (I take Tilcotil/tenoxicam daily for this, there are other NSAIDs in that class supposed to be good for chest inflammation of all types) and pain killers. I find propping myself up at night on lots of soft pillows helps, as lying down is quite restricting on the ribs. Warm showers also help when the pain is really bad. As a last resort, I’ve found IV injections of Tilcotil at the ER to provide some reasonably rapid relief from a *really* bad attack. I have had it a couple times and had x-rays taken and finally was put in the hosp. for it and after a cat scan was done it ended up being lower lobe pneumonia!! Hurt like a hell!! couldn’t cough, breath deep, i couldn’t hardly move it hurt so bad… Both times it was not detected on an x-ray but was on a cat scan. mary/az

Is this common or is it just me? >> He’s either incorrect or he didn’t explain what he meant well enough. My husband is a radiologist and this is a question I’ve asked him myself before. His answer is that x-rays will show pleural effusions (I believe someone else posting here explained this already) which is when there is fluid inside the pleural lining (membrane lining the lungs). X-rays will not show pleurisy alone without the effusion. The way pleurisy is generally diagnosed in that circumstance is by symptoms (which you pretty well described) and by the doctor using a stethoscope to listen for a pleural "rub." Sandra

Hello I’ve been having episodes of chest pain while breathing for quite some time now. When it appears it stays for a few days (sometimes weeks)and then disappears again. Though the X-rays don’t show anything my rheumy thinks I ‘ve pleurisy.. "The serosa is the Latin word used to describe the thin layer of tissue that surrounds our internal organs. e.g. what we call pleura is the layer of tissue around the lungs, similar for peritoneum (around abdominal organs) and pericardia (around the heart). Serositis is an inflammation of these tissues regardless of the course. The thing is that these tissues around the different organs have similar characteristics. So when you have an inflammation of one the rest can sometimes also get affected. That’s why people who tends to have often pleuritis also have a bit of pericarditis". This is how my rheumatologist explained it to me. Maura

Thank you for responding to my message. I hope you get some good answers come March. I will be sure to say a special prayer for you and your daughter. Michele :)

Thank you for explaining that to me. I feel somewhat lost at times. I have been trying to learn what I can from the internet but sometimes I need a real person, like you, to explain it to me and I can understand it. Sometimes I get it for just a few days too and then it will go away. Usually this happens in strong humidity. This episode hit me hard but today I feel really good and the weather is humid…..go figure. I appreciate what you told me. I will pray for you to have some good breathing :) take care Michele

Thank you for responding and sharing what you are going through. I am very sorry for your pain and it does sound very painful. Your condition sounds very serious. I don’t think that is what I have but your information gives me something to look out for. I will say a prayer for you. Take care and breathe easy. Michele

I experience the same thing from time to time. I have primary SjS, I think it’s related to Sjogren’s’ I mentioned it to my Dr. went for chest x-rays as well. Remember w/SjS there’s a dryness involves so it might be that it’s attacking our lungs. I feel different in that area when I breathe and mentioned it to my Rheum she said its the dryness caused by SjS. Maybe that’s’ what you are experiencing. Heather B

This sounds just like what I went through a few mnths ago. I ended up in the hospital with it and they told me it was pleurisy and pericarditis which is inflammation of the heart. Lupus was the cause. Now that part of my lupus is not botherig me. Maybe yours won`t last much longer. My prayers are with you.

It could also be fibromaylgia or costochondritis. With my fibro I get myofascial knots all over my rib cage that need to be massaged out by hand. The process darn near kills me because it’s so painful, but once I’ve worked out enough knots I can breathe a little easier. Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the breastbone. Many times the doctor will push on your breastbone and if it’s tender they’ll call it costo. I have had many episodes in the ER due to chest pain. Luckily all the tests that have ever been done (EKG, stress tests, ultrasound, chest x-rays, chest CAT scans, lung scans, lung perfusion tests – you name it) have always had good results and now that I’ve discovered these myofascial knots I’m able to *fix myself* without having to go to the hospital. When it’s hard to draw a good breath I tend to panic and then I also get short of breath. It’s like a vicious cycle. The panic makes me breathe shallower and faster and the faster I breathe the more I hurt. If the pain is bad please do not hesitate to go to the hospital. They can run tests and relieve your pain. Thank you very much for responding to my questions. I am sorry that you are not feeling well and I hope that you get better soon. I am lucky because this time I do not have the rib pain. The first time I had this was in 97′ and it last about 9-10 months and it involved the ribs. This is a much lighter case, thank God. My dr. was going to put me on prednisone and i asked if we could try something else and he said that we could try a stronger anti-infalmmitory. I get bad headaches on the steroids and my vision gets blurry. I am currently taking Plaquenil and Salsalate. He had me stop taking the Salsalate and start taking indomethacin. It seems to be helping because I can breathe deep today and i feel much much better. I am happy that I found this group and I will say a little prayer for you. Thanks again for your response, it really helped me. Michele

This is common. I’ve had pleurisy several times but must sypathize as I’ve never had it as bad as you seem to. I hope that it settles soon and you feel better. Hugs, Debra

I too have pleural pain. I usually get pleuritis (inflammation of the pleura.) The difference between the two is with pleurisy there is a fluid pocket between the pleura and the lung. The pleura is a thin covering (similar to cellophane) that covers the lungs. Normally there will not be any space between the pleura and the lung. The anti-body response of lupus for us causes an inflammation of the pleura. The body will then sometimes send fluid to the inflamed area that is not designed to hold fluid. If the dr. can not see evidence of what it is, he is telling you he can see a fluid pocket. Fluid will usually show up on an x-ray. He can not see inflammation on an x-ray, although they will feel the same. This is the reason for your pain, especially with inspiration. At this very moment I too am suffering with this pain as well as the rib pain. Do you have pain in the ribs themselves? Are you on prednisone and any narcotic pain relievers?
