I once made the mistake of taking both Sudafed and a big swig of cough medicine that also had pseudoephedrine in it. So I ended up getting more than twice as much pseudoephedrine dose as you’re supposed to. Not only did I experience the tachycardia and palpitations you’re describing, but I also got chest pains (a sign that my heart wasn’t liking this) and the feeling of "ants crawling on my skin." Scariest night I ever had. — Steven D. At this point, the >>congestion is obviously terrible. However, that is not my main concern: >>One year ago back on Sept 8, I started to have strange symptoms, >>actually had to go via ambulance to the hospital twice. The symptoms >>are severe tachycardia, skipped beats, severe onset of shortness of >>breath, numbness, tingling, vertigo. They all seemed to come out of >>know where. >>Since, I have had cardiology and pulmonary testing done, but there are >>no answers. The only two things that turned up were a positive ANA and >>elevated Cortisol levels (not autoimmune, no Lupus found). >>I was placed on Atenolol 50 mg for the Tachycardia, which is useless. >>My question is, can the 1% solution of Phenylephrine as found in most >>nasal sprays have caused these symptoms? The doctor says no, but surely >>abusing this stuff cannot be good. Any insight? >>PS: Is Rhinocort any good? >>Best, >>Bill > That is a huge overdosage of Phenylephrine. You’ll need to > taper off and this won’t be easy. Measure and dilute each new bottle you > open by another 10% with saline water and always do the same amount of > squirts (1 or 2) and keep track of exactly how many times a day you use the > spray. Increase the dilution of each new bottle you open by another 10% > until you need to throw away a measured amount of a new bottle in order to > keep increasing dilution. Decrease the frequency of squirts used each day > and keep track so you can always be slowly decreasing frequency.

There is now at least one product on the market, "Rhinostat," specifically designed to assist the process of tapering off nasal sprays: http://nasalspray.com/ I’ve never used it so I don’t know how well it works. But it indicates how common this problem is. — Steven D. Litvintchouk Email: sdlit…@earthlinkNOSPAM.net Remove the NOSPAM before replying to me.

Yes Phenylephrine has well-known cardiac side-effects. You do need to get off it. Steven’s posts are exactly correct. The tachycardia is not necessarily of enormous consequence, but anything to do with your heart is more important than other things. >PS: Is Rhinocort any good?

Yes but it alone is probably not enough to deal with the rebound congestion you are going to experience when you start to cut back on the Phenylephrine. You may need a short-course of gradually-decreasing prescribed oral steroids, under the supervision of an ENT, to tide you over when you start cutting back on the Phenylephrine. However, oral steroids should not casually be taken long term as they can have even worse side-effects than the Phenylephrine, so really you will have to plot your course carefully with the help of an ENT, as Steven suggests…..

I had racing heart and skipping heart beats when I took Sudafed PE pills which also has Phenylephrine as an active ingredient. Quite scary to experience! Probably should have gone to an ER but instead just waited for it to run its course. Later found out I took the wrong dose 2 pills instead of 1 pill like the original Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) dose. I called the makers of Sudafed and said their packaging was misleading (packed in groups of 2 if you can believe it). I think each person reacts differently to the various decongestants. I can’t believe that the doctor wouldn’t think this contributed to your symptoms. Just look at the package directions and see the warnings! I think the suggestions to do the withdrawal under an ENT’s care sound the most likely for success. Good luck!

I am hoping that someone may be able to provide an answer to my question: I have been using 4-Way Nasal Spray (Phenylephrine HCL 1%) daily for the last 12 years, as a stop gap solution for congestion (which I’ve had my entire life) I typically use this spray every fifteen minutes, six squirts each nostril, and use about four bottles per week. At this point, the congestion is obviously terrible.
Absolutely. Phenylephrine is a stimulant and a vasoconstrictor. With a large enough dose, some of it will get absorbed systemically into your bloodstream right thru your nose (just like snorting cocaine). And it may end up causing both tachycardia and constricting the blood vessels in your heart–which can be disastrous. The symptoms you’re describing fit the combination of overstimulation and vasoconstriction exactly. You’ll have to taper off the phenylephrine. I think you should consult a physician who knows about this problem–the medical name is "rhinitis medicamentosa." He can prescribe a combination of systemic steroids (Medrol) and steroid nasal sprays (e.g., Nasonex) to help you cope with the withdrawal symptom of congestion till your body adjusts. Without these prescription meds, you may not be able to kick the habit on your own–though you can try it and see. Once you’re off the phenylephrine, you should consult an ENT who can finally help cure your congestion so you won’t ever have to go back to phenylephrine anymore. — Steven D.
The Phenylephrine in 4-way is the obvious culprit and I’m really surprised your Dr didn’t know this. Phenylephrine can cause the exact same symptoms as overusing any stimulant, whether it is coffee or diet pills. 12 hr nose spray isn’t any better but the rebound happens a little quicker with Phenylephrine. I used 4-way for many years in the past, but never at 4 bottles a week. That is a huge overdosage of Phenylephrine. You’ll need to taper off and this won’t be easy. Measure and dilute each new bottle you open by another 10% with saline water and always do the same amount of squirts (1 or 2) and keep track of exactly how many times a day you use the spray. Increase the dilution of each new bottle you open by another 10% until you need to throw away a measured amount of a new bottle in order to keep increasing dilution. Decrease the frequency of squirts used each day and keep track so you can always be slowly decreasing frequency. After you get down to using .05% Phenylephrine or a twentyfold dilution and you are using only 1 squirt at a time, then try stopping entirely or alternating days. Then quit the Phenylephrine completely and don’t buy any more. You may need to use Sudafed for a few weeks while tapering off the Phenylephrine as the rebound will be severe. Also, start using a nasal steroid like Rhinacort or Flonase regularly. If you really stick with it, you can taper yourself off the Phenylephrine in 2-3 months. Suggest you monitor your blood pressure closely while using the Sudafed and see a good ENT to help you develop a better strategy for dealing with your congestion. Read the group FAQ and especially the section about saline nasal irrigation. Regular saline irrigation would be very helpful in getting your nose readjusted to life without Phenylephrine. good luck, AW ps-oral Phenylephrine tablets are now available but you really need a Dr’s advice if you are planning to switch from such a high dose of nasal spray to the tablets – especially considering the heart symptoms that you have already had.

It just happens in some people and is called alopecia areata. Let me guesss that you also have soe thinning of the hair also. It can also be caused by: * a hormonal imbalance (hypo or hyperthyroid or other) * diabetes * anemia * systemic lupus erythematosus (butterfly rash on face) * poisoning (X-rays, pesticides, lead, mercury) * thrush * kidney or liver problems >1.can sinus infection cause it . ( i mean common cold ) .. i always get >cold from my birth in cold season …

No >2. Can depression cause it ? 3-4 years ago i was very depressed due to >low marks in college exams .

Stress can cause it. >3. can leaver problem ( digestion problem ) cause it … a friend of >mine told me that leaver ( i dont know how to spell it exactly but its >something we have in our body to digest food ) .. problem cause it ….

Liver problems can cause it.

I have a stepsister that got white hair at 16 years old. This was inherited as her Mother had the same problem at a young age too. She has 4 sisters and none of them inherited it. As she is older now, her MD told her she has a high Mercury count. She had to replace the Amalg (silver) fillings in her teeth. shirley

Turns out the daughter took a field trip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and the man she met (who had almost the same exact chat screen name as my nephew!) was a big burly convict-looking New York City Cop. The Judge is going to send the daughter to counseling and order her to perform community service … and give her a hug.

Four people have been arrested in the case but the paintings haven’t been recovered. And officials say their offer is a simple "exchange of paintings for money." Police have rejected reports that the thieves destroyed the paintings because they feared police were closing in and did not want to be caught with the evidence. Experts say both paintings are too well known for the thieves to be able to sell them.

A Jamestown man already pleaded guilty to state charges in the case and is trying to work out a federal plea deal that would send him to federal prison for 18 years. But the men elsewhere who were watching the abuse live on the Internet – and sending instant messages offering encouragement and suggestions – are now the targets of the federal probe. "This investigation is now worldwide in scope, and we’re putting a lot of resources into determining who else might have been involved," added Special Agent Paul M. Moskal, spokesman for the Buffalo FBI office. "This is the first time anything like this has been uncovered in Western New York. Essentially, we have a case of interactive molestation of a young girl," Assistant U.S. Attorney Martin J. Littlefield said. "They’ve taken this kind of crime up to a new level . . . It’s outrageous." In this case, Littlefield said, it is important to note that a concerned member of the victim’s family told Jamestown police they believed James F. Lindgren Sr. might be molesting the girl. "Jamestown police quickly brought the FBI into the case, and they were able to bring this to a stop," Littlefield said. "It’s a good thing someone came forward with the information." Lindgren, 55, appeared before District Judge Richard J. Arcara in an attempt to enter a guilty plea late Thursday, but the judge objected to some of the language of the agreement and ordered attorneys to make changes.

————————————————————————— —– Published May 26, 2005 There is a good chance that legislation to lift President Bush’s restrictions on embryonic stem cell research will pass the Senate, as it did in the House on Tuesday. There is an even better chance that Bush will veto the legislation. The president’s ardent pro-life position on stem cell research is understandable – but misguided. The reality is that the fate of thousands of existing frozen embryos will be destruction. That’s right; an estimated 8,000 embryos a year are discarded as medical waste. Some may be "adopted" by infertile couples and become candidates for so-called "snowflake babies", a reference to frozen embryos. But the fact remains that many more fertilized human eggs are thrown away. These are the embryos that many people, including ardent pro-life lawmakers in Congress, want to save. Why? Because the embryos themselves have the potential to be pro-life. They hold great potential for researchers seeking cures and treatment for a host of debilitating diseases. It is true that these embryonic stem cells must be destroyed as part of the research. It is also true that their destruction offers hope, and life, to millions of people. It is no wonder, then, that a Republican-controlled House, so solidly behind President Bush on most issues, has chosen to break with the president on this particular issue. Bipartisan groups of U.S. senators and representatives have implored the president to relent. He show no signs of doing so. Passage of this House-passed, bipartisan legislation would not affect embryo adoptions. People could still do so. But it would give embryo donors the option of donating the fertilized eggs for scientific research, as opposed to having them thrown out. If the embryos are to be destroyed in any event, logic dictates that they be used for the good of humankind and not flushed away. Many people in both major political parties have reached that conclusion. Perhaps the president will, too. — Gardening Zones Canada Zone 5a United States Zone 3a Near Ottawa, Ontario

I think you mean that you do not agree with the President’s committee. This is a very tricky issue and a lot of people would rather see embryos wasted instead of used for research. I personally would rather see the research funded but I don’t think that "a genuine feeling" is wrong. — Phan

I must admit to being a little curious….. How did the whole Lady Veteran-Boar Semen thing start anyway? Why boars especially and not some other animal? Was there something/some kind of incident going back to the beginning of the group? Is there’s still anybody out there who’s been part of the group for a few years…..

Bean paste curbs obesity, study finds Want to stay healthy? Then stick to a traditional Korean diet with plenty of "doenjang," fermented soy bean paste. That’s what a study by professor Park Gyun-young of Busan University found. He has scientific evidence to back the time-old belief that Korean traditional bean paste prevents obesity, and discovered that the soy bean paste has much stronger antiobesity properties than "gochujang," red pepper paste. The researchers put two groups of mice on a high-fat diet for a month, feeding one group of mice with an additional 10 percent of bean paste. Mice fed bean paste put on an average 246.6 grams while the others recorded a 287.4-gram weight increase. "While the main ingredient of doenjang, soy bean, is being fermented and dissolved into amino acids, it seems to boost the antiobesity effect," Park said. "If we look into its mechanism further, it could be used in medicines." While reinforcing a long-held belief on the nation’s condiments, the study also discovered that the obesity-fighting effect varies – it is the strongest in doenjang, then ssamjang (a mix of doenjang and gochujang), and weakest in gochujang.

States consider obesity surgery coverage NOREEN GILLESPIE Associated Press HARTFORD, Conn. – A proposal before Connecticut lawmakers would require insurance companies to cover the surgery for people with a body-mass index of 30 or more if a doctor deems the surgery medically necessary. The BMI is a widely used formula based on height and weight. The Connecticut proposal may not get off the ground this session because lawmakers are struggling to define under what medical conditions the surgery should be covered, said Sen. Joseph Crisco, a Woodbridge Democrat who chairs the legislative committee looking at the issue. The debate is not unlike others across the country. Georgia lawmakers are considering a similar bill this year. And in Louisiana, 40 state employees were chosen last year from 1,200 applications to get the surgery on the state’s dime. The standard surgery, which can cost between $20,000 and $35,000, involves using staples to separate a small pouch at the stomach’s top from the rest of the stomach, greatly limiting the amount of food that can be eaten. The procedure also involves bypassing much of the small intestine so that less food is absorbed into the body. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama recently stopped paying for the operations while it decides how to handle claims; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida has also decided to stop paying for the operation. In Connecticut, many major plans offer coverage only for large numbers of employees. Others are considering offering the coverage for an additional charge. "What we’re starting to see is an increase in what we would consider at best, unnecessary, and at worst, unsafe, surgery," said Keith Stover, a lobbyist for the Connecticut Association of Health Plans. "Many plans decide the best course of action simply is to exclude coverage." But many physicians say the long-term benefits of weight loss surgery outweigh the risk. Gastric bypass surgery can help cure obesity-related health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and even diabetes, said Dr. Jonathan Aranow, director of the Middlesex Hospital Center for Obesity Surgery. It can also cut down on the long-term cost of medications, he said. "The surgery pays for itself in under three years," he said. "There is no question that there are cost savings." Last year the federal government opened the door for Medicare coverage of gastric bypass surgery. But some lawmakers and insurers are also worried about risks. State Rep. Anthony D’Amelio, R-Waterbury, said noted two people in his district died after having the operation. Complications strike as many as 1 in 5 patients having the surgery, and it is believed that for every 200 patients, 1 to 4 will die. Estimates are that more than 100,000 people will have the surgery this year. "I would rather see people try to do it the harder way, exercise and eating properly," D’Amelio said. "I know it’s a struggle … I think it’s the safest route." But for some patients, the hard way hasn’t worked. Deborah Sicaras, 36, of Wethersfield, has tried Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, diet pills and liquid diets; she also teaches ballet, tap and jazz four days a week. "I’m one of the fortunate ones who will be able to have this surgery in the very near future," she said. "I can’t do this by myself. I need assistance. I’ve dieted my whole life."

I have a slight cold (slight headache, high temperature, sore throat and dizziness — my pharmacist agreed that this sounds like a cold), and am wondering about using mega-vitamin therapy (large doses — I think it needs about 1g per day — of Vitamin C) to deal with it. However, today I started a new tub of test strips, and one thing which Bayer says might cause false results is the presence in the bloodstream of unusually high concentrations of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). I’m wondering if it’s alright to take up mega-vitamin therapy, or would this push the ascorbic acid concentration high enough to cause false readings?

If you’re at all concerned that you might not be getting enough vitamins, go with a good one-a-day vitamin-mineral supplement. Unless you have a known deficiency in something, you shouldn’t need anything else. My favourite quotation about colds: "A cold will last a week if you treat it, and seven days if you don’t". Wish I could remember where I heard it, it deserves to have a proper attribution. I agree with Bernard. I *always* treat a cold with neat whisky. I still have the cold for a week, but, with careful dosages, I don’t care how I feel! ;-S Maggie — Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent. – RD Laing

The vitamins won’t do anything for the cold and might screw up the tests. Have stiff drink instead. It won’t help the cold either, but you might feel a little better for a while. — Bernard Peek London, UK. DBA, Manager, Trainer & Author.

Hi All – I am posting for a friend of mine because you are all a knowledgable bunch. She is having this strange swelling of the side of her face, around her jaw line and sometimes up into her cheek. I looks like a tennis ball in the side of her face where the jaw line meets the neck, and the cheek area will also look swollen. The swelling lasts for about a day or two and is random in when it occurs. They thought it might be allergies — it happens right after she eats, but there is no consistency in which food makes it happen — she can be fine eating it one time and not the next. The only constant is that it always happens immediately after eating. I was thinking something with the salivary glands. I know some of you have Sjoners (spell?) — does that happen to any of you? Just thought I would ask. Thanks!!! Stephanie

"Velma Crain" wrote in message > Stephanie, > I would definitely have your friend check into Sjogrens Syndrome. One > of the symptoms is swollen salivary glands. I have Sjogrens and recently > had an infection in my salivary gland that caused my ear to swell shut (I > couldnt hear) the pain was intense. I had had many other symptoms in the > past but this was the one that finally caused my DR to say yup you have > Sjogrens!! I was given an antibiotic and lived on Motrin for a few days!! > Frankie

Ditto on what Frankie has said. Sjogrens comes as a first dx in my mind too as I have had the salivary gland problem (blocked and inflamed which worsens with aggravation; ie: eating) with my dx of sjogrens, which is secondary to lupus along with raynauds.
Sjogrens – with two dots above the o if you’re being posh > — does that >happen to any of you? Just thought I would ask.

Yes it does. One cause is constriction of the tube that delivers the saliva from the gland (you have 4 glands I think, or maybe its 6) into the mouth. When saliva is produced it can’t get out, so the gland swells. Another is inflammation of the gland. — Andy Taylor [Chair, N E Lupus Group] See http://www.northeastlupus.org.uk for more!

I was curious about that myself and was gonna ask the ENT tomorrow. Wow that is a pretty staggering % of failure, if you will. I am waiting on a callback from a doctor that does the Pillar Procedure. whom I call Friday. Hopefully I will here from them tomorrow that way I can get a consultation on that one as well. That is true on the 100% recover. Thank you. I’m glad it is helping as well. My doc did advise me that I cannot stay on the Prednisone for too long plus also read the same online. This one is where I take 4 pills for 3 days, 3 for 3 days, 2 for 3 days and finally 1 for 3 days. I am on day 3 of these so starting tomorrow I will start the slow ramping. We will see where we go from there and also what the Rheumatologist says on Feb 28th. Sure would be nice to know what this is. So what have they been telling your brother? Hopefully they will find out how to treat his as well. Good luck.
I’ve only had them draw five tubes at once one time. It was when they did all the autoimmune stuff (turning up complaining of arthritis and being hypothyroid on the last thyroid check). As I remember, it one of the tests took an entire tube, and the others were because the remaining stuff required different preservatives. (Different tube stopper colors, different preservatives. So they don’t grab pink tubes for girl patients and blue tubes for boy patients.) As far as I’m concerned, five is just about as easy as one for the patient, they do all the extra work.
